Dance, theatre, music, and site-specific performances in Rome's urban nature
Founded in the early 2000s, Attraversamenti Multipli is one of the most established festivals for contemporary performing arts in the Municipality of Rome and the entire Lazio region. Conceived and curated by the Margine Operativo company, under the artistic direction of Alessandra Ferraro and Pako Graziani, the festival has long made its home in the Parco di Torre del Fiscale. This green area of the Appia Antica Regional Park is tucked between the Appio-Tuscolano and Quadraro districts, where the Acquedotto Felice and the Acquedotto Claudio intersect to create a setting unique in Europe.
The formula is declared in the festival's subtitle: dance, theatre, music, and site-specific performances in urban nature. It is not merely an outdoor festival, but a project that invites artists to engage with the landscape, the ruins, the meadows, and the people who live in the park every day.
The theme guiding the most recent programming is Coexistence, a natural evolution of the reflection on fragility explored in previous years. In a world marked by war, climate emergency, social inequality, and humanitarian crises, the festival proposes the creation of spaces and times for encounter as both an artistic and political gesture. The works on the programme investigate the ecological relationship between people and between humans and the environment, with a relational dynamic that draws the spectator into the scenic action.
Each edition brings together around 25 companies for about forty performances, shows, and site-specific interventions, many of which are national premieres or created exclusively for the festival. Alongside names from the Italian scene, there is space for Spanish, French, and Belgian choreographers and collectives, in a window dedicated to international contemporary dance.
A significant portion of the programme is reserved for artists under 35, with a particular focus on contemporary dance that explores the relationship with the landscape. Workshops are also a key feature: some creations presented at the festival are born from workshops held in the preceding days, involving performers and local residents. One day is traditionally dedicated to families, with shows and activities for children aged four to ten.
The festival's journey does not end in the Capital. A few weeks after the Roman dates, Attraversamenti Multipli moves to the historic centre of Toffia, a small village in the province of Rieti overlooking the Sabina region, for a special section dedicated primarily to new generations of spectators. The shows take place in the village's urban spaces, among alleys, small squares, and panoramic viewpoints, confirming the project's itinerant and regional vocation.
Beyond its artistic quality, Attraversamenti Multipli serves as a cultural hub for an area of the city that rarely hosts international-level events. The park, reclaimed over the years thanks to the work of local associations, fills with Roman audiences and spectators from all over Lazio, in an informal setting where it is possible to arrive by bicycle along the Appia Antica cycle path, sit on the grass, and watch the shows with the Roman aqueducts in the background. It is a different way to experience the Lazio region in summer: without the crowds of a large-scale event, but with a curated and coherent artistic proposal.
Ten days of programming at the Parco di Torre del Fiscale brought an international selection of contemporary dance, theatre, music, and circus to Rome. The artistic direction of Alessandra Ferraro and Pako Graziani built a journey around the keyword Coexistence, interpreted as an artistic and political response to the fragilities of the present: war, climate emergency, and social inequality.
The opening evening on 11 June was entrusted to a site-specific work by Spanish dancer Daniel RodrÃguez, accompanied by contemporary French and Italian choreography and a live video performance. The second week, from 17 to 20 June, focused on national and international premieres: the French company Cie MF with Say something (18 June), the Belgian collective Poetic Punkers with Dance invasion (19 June), and the Italian premieres Sweet dreams (17 June) and Mykestesia (20 June).
Ample space was given to under-35s: young choreographer Veronica Parlagreco presented Giuiuzza, while Francesca Santamaria signed urban installations and video dance pieces. Alessandro Carboni staged Unleashing ghosts from urban darkness, a creation born from the festival's workshops. 14 June was dedicated to families with workshops and shows for children aged 4 to 10; in the finale, in addition to Margine Operativo, Mondocane and other live musical projects also performed.
On 3 and 4 July, the festival moved to the urban spaces of the historic centre of Toffia (RI), with two days of contemporary circus and performances aimed primarily at new generations of spectators.
Shows took place mainly between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM. In total, 25 companies and 36 performances, shows, and site-specific works were presented.
