About Assunta Festival

For the solemnity of the Assumption, Selva di Progno celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima Assunta, with the traditional mid-August festival. Religion, music, and dancing blend for several days in the town of Alta Lessinia: the procession, the Craft Exhibition, evenings with orchestra and dancing, and food stalls with typical dishes like malga sbautui gnocchi. To crown the festival, the now indispensable Firing of the Trombini, a symbol of this community's link to its Cimbrian roots.

The Patron Saint's Feast in the Heart of Lessinia

The Assunta Festival is the patronal feast of Selva di Progno, a town in Alta Lessinia, in the province of Verona. It is celebrated around August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, the town's patron saint. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Municipality and the Pro Loco prepare, as every year, the traditional festival where religion, music, and dancing intertwine for several days of celebration.

Procession, Crafts, and Mountain Gastronomy

The program alternates devotional moments with convivial ones: the procession with the statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Craft Exhibition (traditionally inaugurated on the 15th), evenings with orchestra and dancing, and food stalls. Among the typical dishes, gnocchi sbautui stand out, the malga gnocchi of Lessinia tradition, an expression of the peasant cuisine of these mountains.

The Firing of the Trombini, Seal of the Cimbrian Community

What makes the festival unique is the climactic moment of the Firing of the Trombini: the ancient arquebuses, now harmless, are fired in a ceremony as a symbol of tradition and connection to one's land. It is the thread that connects Selva di Progno to its Cimbrian roots, the same culture that animates the other hamlets of the municipality. An identity festival that draws residents, holidaymakers, and visitors to the Lessinian plateau.
