Masks, parades, and the burning of the Meio effigy in the heart of the Crete Senesi
In the heart of Tuscany, nestled among the clay hills of the Crete Senesi, the town of Asciano (Province of Siena) hosts one of the area's most heartfelt carnivals. Born in the 1970s as a simple youth festival, the Asciano Carnival has grown into one of the most important folk events in the region, drawing families and curious visitors from across the Sienese territory.
The festival spans several Sundays in February, enlivening the streets of the historic center, Piazza Garibaldi, and the Scuderie del Granduca. Each day follows a well-established rhythm: the morning is dedicated to the Meio Train, the most popular attraction for children, while the afternoon kicks off with grand masquerade parades accompanied by street bands, costumed groups, roving entertainment, and live performances. There is no shortage of face painting, inflatables, and creative workshops designed for kids.
The symbolic heart of the Asciano Carnival is Meio, the cobbler who has become the event's mascot. The festival always culminates with the reading of the Testament of Meio and the burning of the effigy: a popular ritual that marks the end of the Carnival and a wish for renewal, preceded by the awards ceremony for the Best Mask and Best Costumed Group.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Asciano with the support of the Municipality and Visit Crete Senesi, the Carnival blends popular tradition with fresh ideas, such as cosplay competitions and themed evenings. Most activities are free to attend, making it an ideal appointment to experience the Tuscan village during the winter, while discovering the unique landscape of the Crete Senesi.
Visiting the Carnival is also an opportunity to explore Asciano, an ancient village along the Via Lauretana just a few kilometers from Siena, famous for its museums, Romanesque churches, and the characteristic panorama of the Crete: rolling clay hills, gullies, and white mounds that change color with the seasons. With its festive and family-friendly atmosphere, the Carnival is perfect for those who want to experience an authentic village celebration away from the crowds of the major Tuscan carnivals, while keeping the charm of Sienese popular tradition intact.
The 51st edition of the Asciano Carnival centered around an "Infernal" theme, reflected in costumes, set designs, and performances. The festival spanned four days (February 1, 7, 8, and 15, 2026) across the historic center, Piazza Garibaldi, and the Scuderie del Granduca, organized by the Pro Loco of Asciano with the support of the Municipality and Visit Crete Senesi.
New additions this year included the Saturday night Infernal Night with a spicy dinner and DJ set, and the Cosplay Carnival with its associated competition. The finale on February 15 upheld tradition with the reading of the Testament of Meio and the burning of the effigy.

Asciano can be reached by car via the SS438 Lauretana from Siena (approx. 25 km). It is served by the train station on the Siena-Grosseto line. During festival days, the historic center is primarily pedestrianized.
Most activities, including those for children and the cosplay competition, are free of charge. The Infernal Night dinner requires a mandatory reservation.
