The life-size nativity scene at the Rocca dei Colonna that comes to life for Epiphany with 'The Nativity Comes to Life'
The Artistic Nativity Scene of Castel San Pietro Romano is one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in the Monti Prenestini, in the province of Rome. Every year, starting in early December, the Rocca dei Colonna — the ancient medieval fortress that dominates the entire valley from its height of over 760 meters — is transformed into a grand, life-size nativity scene, featuring around twenty scenes and dozens of figures arranged along a path of hundreds of square meters through halls, tunnels, and spaces carved directly into the rock.
Established in 2005 on the initiative of the Pro Loco, the nativity scene has grown with each edition to become a symbol of the village's identity, one of the smallest in Lazio and recognized as a place of great charm in the Monti Prenestini. The scenes reconstruct the Nativity and the rural and artisan life of the past: workshops, ancient crafts, and moments of daily life, all illuminated by meticulous scenography that makes every corner of the fortress part of the story.
The heart of the event is 'The Nativity Comes to Life', the living nativity that animates the fortress and the alleys of the historic center during the Epiphany. Over a hundred costumed actors — soldiers, farmers, artisans, and biblical characters — bring movement to the scenes, while the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Piazza San Pietro marks the most anticipated moment. The village becomes an evocative itinerary through scenes of rural life, traditional Christmas representations, and food stalls offering local products such as homemade bread, Prenestino olive oil, and traditional sweets.
The nativity scene is the result of the work of an entire community: alongside the Pro Loco, the L'Allegra Brigata Association, the Living Nativity Group of the Sant'Antonio Parish of Palestrina, and the Municipality of Castel San Pietro Romano collaborate on the project. The 'Schools at the Nativity' project welcomes thousands of students every year for guided tours, introducing younger generations to the traditions and heritage of the territory.
Visiting the Artistic Nativity Scene means discovering one of the most beautiful villages in Lazio during the most magical time of the year. From the fortress, the view sweeps across the Roman countryside, reaching the sea on clear days; under the vaults of the fortress, the magic of the nativity combines art, popular faith, and community in an experience that attracts visitors from across the region and beyond every year. Admission is free.
The 21st edition of the Artistic Nativity Scene of Castel San Pietro Romano opened its doors on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at 6:00 PM, with the inauguration of the life-size display in the halls and environments of the Rocca dei Colonna. In the following weeks, the nativity scene remained open to visitors throughout the Christmas period, featuring Nativity scenes, artisan workshops, and moments of rural life illuminated by careful scenography.
The highlight arrived for the Epiphany: on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the display transformed into a living nativity with 'The Nativity Comes to Life'. From the afternoon, over a hundred costumed actors animated the village alleys and the fortress rooms, while the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Piazza San Pietro drew numerous visitors. There was no shortage of food stalls with homemade bread, Prenestino olive oil, and traditional local sweets.
Program promoted by the Municipality of Castel San Pietro Romano with the Pro Loco, the L'Allegra Brigata Association, and the Living Nativity Group of the Sant'Antonio Parish of Palestrina.
