A summer arena on the banks of the Tiber

Arena 11 – Cinema and Community was launched in 2025 as an open-air film festival in Parco Tevere Marconi, located along the riverbank in the heart of Rome's XI Municipality. For one week in early September, the screen lights up at dusk: with about 150 seats, free admission, and no reservations required, the audience is primarily composed of locals.

The name reflects the Municipality's number: the arena is designed as a grassroots venue rather than a top-down showcase. It is curated by the Cultural Pro APS association, which has long worked on themes of intercultural dialogue and won the Roma Creativa 365. Culture all year round public call, promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Culture in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura.

Transcultural cinema: what it means

The festival defines itself as transcultural, and this is no mere buzzword. The selection bridges Italian auteur cinema with films from the countries of origin of the diaspora communities living in Rome: Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Albania, Bangladesh, and Senegal. The curators' stated goal is to move beyond an exclusively Eurocentric perspective and show how stories of the periphery, labor, and migration resonate across continents.

Each edition revolves around a thematic thread. The first edition in 2025 focused on labor: exploitation, unemployment, environmental destruction, and the resulting consequences, from inequality to racism. This theme was far from random in the Marconi neighborhood, which grew around the factories on the left bank of the Tiber and is marked by the dialectic between the center and the periphery that shaped contemporary Rome.

The Marconi neighborhood and its park

Parco Tevere Marconi overlooks the river near Lungotevere di Pietra Papa, just a short walk from Ponte Marconi. It is a reclaimed space returned to the city, now a reference point for the XI Municipality's summer: the same park hosts the Notti di Cinema a Parco Tevere Marconi festival during July and August. Arena 11 arrives later, in September, when Roman evenings become cooler and residents return to the city.

Why it is worth visiting

Those looking for an open-air cinema evening in Rome are spoiled for choice: in the summer of 2026, there are about thirty active arenas in the city, from Trastevere to the Idroscalo in Ostia. However, Arena 11 stands out for its precise editorial vision and neighborhood focus: it is not an open-air multiplex, but a cultural project that uses cinema as a tool for social cohesion. Visitors from outside the XI Municipality will find a slice of Rome that is authentic and vibrant; locals will find a community event right on their doorstep.

Participation is free and informal: you arrive, take a seat, and after the screening, discussions often continue among the chairs in the park.
