About Ambrosian Carnival

The Ambrosian Carnival of Porlezza is the carnival celebration of the town on Lake Lugano, in the province of Como, celebrated according to the Ambrosian rite: when the rest of Italy is already in Lent, Porlezza is still celebrating. Floats, masks, and musical bands parade through the streets of the center on Ambrosian Fat Saturday, in a colorful and popular event that involves families and children. A tradition that testifies to the territory's belonging to the Milanese cultural and religious area.

The Carnival That Lasts Longer

The Ambrosian Carnival of Porlezza has a peculiarity that makes it special: it follows the calendar of the Ambrosian rite, that of the diocese of Milan. This means that in Porlezza, a town on Lake Lugano in the province of Como, carnival is celebrated when Lent has already begun in the rest of Italy, with the famous Ambrosian Fat Saturday falling a few days after the Roman rite's Fat Tuesday.

Floats, Masks, and Bands

The festival brings floats, masks, and musical bands to the streets of the historic center, in a colorful parade that involves the entire community. Children and families are the real protagonists, amidst confetti, costumes, and music, in an atmosphere of joy that enlivens the town in the heart of winter, on the shores of Lake Ceresio.

A Border Tradition

The Ambrosian rite tells the identity of a territory historically linked to Milan from a religious and cultural point of view. The Ambrosian Carnival of Porlezza is therefore also a sign of belonging, a tradition that distinguishes this corner of the province of Como from the surrounding areas and that the community proudly preserves.

A Celebration for the Whole Community

More than a show, the Ambrosian Carnival is a moment of collective participation: associations, oratories, and local groups collaborate in the creation of the floats and the animation of the parade. For those visiting Lake Lugano in winter, it is an opportunity to discover a living and authentic tradition, far from the big tourist carnivals.
