About Amatrice-Cardito Re-enactment

Every summer in Amatrice, in the province of Rieti, vintage cars take center stage for the Amatrice-Cardito Historical Re-enactment, a tribute to the legendary hill climb that challenged the best drivers on the ascent to the village of Cardito until the early 1990s. Part of the broader Lazio Classico rally, the event combines a passion for classic motoring with a commitment to the rebirth of Amatrice following the 2016 earthquake, featuring a parade of historic vehicles traveling the ancient Via Salaria to the heart of the Rieti town.

A motoring legend reborn in the Rieti region

The Amatrice-Cardito Historical Re-enactment brings back to life one of the most beloved hill climb races in Central Italy. Until the early 1990s, the race connecting Amatrice to the hamlet of Cardito, in the province of Rieti, saw the era's top drivers compete on a winding, spectacular track, often behind the wheels of powerful BMWs. Today, that charm returns in the form of a re-enactment, with elegant vintage cars driving up the same road to celebrate the memory of a competition that has become a legend in Lazio's motoring history.

Part of Lazio Classico

The event is part of Lazio Classico, the major vintage car rally organized by ASI - Automotoclub Storico Italiano together with the Club Autostoriche Rieti and a dozen affiliated clubs from across the region. The edition brings together about seventy crews who, starting from Rome, cross the Lazio region along the historic Via Salaria (SS4), stopping in Rieti before reaching Amatrice, where the cars are welcomed by the applause of enthusiasts.

Motors and solidarity for the rebirth of Amatrice

The event carries a strong symbolic value: engines become a tool for the rebirth of a community deeply scarred by the 2016 earthquake. It was during the re-enactment that the ASI Motor Park project was born, an urban regeneration initiative funded by the ASI Solidale Commission, aimed at giving Amatrice a new public space dedicated to social interaction, located in the area adjacent to the church of Sant'Agostino.

The atmosphere of the event

For one day, the village of Amatrice transforms into an open-air museum where you can admire up close the sedans, spiders, and grand tourers that made automotive history. Between the roar of vintage engines, the colors of polished bodywork, and the passion of the clubs, the re-enactment offers a unique opportunity to combine motoring culture, historical memory, and the rediscovery of an authentic territory in the Lazio Apennines.

An event for enthusiasts and families

  • Parade of vintage cars along the Via Salaria to Amatrice
  • Tribute to the Amatrice-Cardito hill climb of the golden years
  • Regularity trials and trophies reserved for the crews
  • Side events linked to the rebirth of the Rieti village

The Amatrice-Cardito Historical Re-enactment is now one of the most significant motoring events in Lazio, capable of combining nostalgia for great motor racing with a concrete message of solidarity and revival for the city of Amatrice.

Amatrice-Cardito Re-enactment — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Amatrice-Cardito Historical Re-enactment took place on Saturday, July 11, as part of the Lazio Classico rally. A parade of vintage cars traveled the ancient Via Salaria from Rome to Amatrice, celebrating the historic hill climb and marking the launch of the ASI Motor Park project for the rebirth of the Rieti village.

Lazio Classico 2026

The 2026 re-enactment was the heart of Lazio Classico, organized by ASI and the Club Autostoriche Rieti with a dozen affiliated clubs from Lazio and about seventy vintage car crews. The parade started from Rome, in the EUR district, and then traveled up the Via Salaria (SS4) with a stop in Rieti and arrival in Amatrice, where the legendary Amatrice-Cardito hill climb was honored.

During the day, the ASI Motor Park project was presented, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the mayor of Amatrice and the president of ASI, confirming the bond between a passion for motors and the community's rebirth after the 2016 earthquake.
