Montefalco Returns to the Middle Ages
The Agosto Montefalchese is the grand medieval historical re-enactment of Montefalco, a splendid village in the province of Perugia known as the "balcony of Umbria" for the panorama it offers over the Valle Umbra. For about three weeks, the four districts — San Bartolomeo, San Fortunato, San Francesco, and Sant'Agostino — compete in a series of challenges that animate the Piazza del Comune and the streets of the center.
Challenges Between the Districts
The calendar is marked by highly evocative events: the costumed historical procession, the flag-wavers' and drummers' competitions, the district shows, crossbow shooting, and the relay race. Everything culminates in the Fuga del Bove (Running of the Bulls), the concluding event that recalls ancient tradition and determines the winning district.
Taverns and the Flavors of Sagrantino
During the event, the district taverns open, where you can taste traditional Montefalco dishes accompanied by the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco: from gnocchi with Sagrantino to steak, in a combination of history, folklore, and food and wine that makes the Agosto Montefalchese one of Umbria's most beloved re-enactments.
Agosto Montefalchese — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Agosto Montefalchese and Fuga del Bove enlivens Montefalco from July 30 to August 19, with the four districts engaged in the challenges set up in Piazza del Comune.
From the opening Renaissance banquet, we move to the highlight evenings in mid-August — historical procession, flag-wavers, drummers, district shows, relay race, and crossbow shooting — culminating in the spectacular Fuga del Bove on August 19. The district taverns remain open from August 6 to 19.
