Faces, colors, and flavors of African cultures in Sicily
Afrosiciliana is a multicultural festival that brings the historic center of Monreale, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, to life every year in late May. Promoted by the Coordination of African Consulates in Sicily in collaboration with the Municipality of Monreale, the festival was created to showcase the numerous African communities residing in Sicily and to strengthen cultural, social, and economic ties between the island and the African continent.
The event is centered in the picturesque Piazza Guglielmo II, located directly in front of Monreale's UNESCO-listed Arab-Norman Cathedral. Here, themed stalls are set up representing participating countries, featuring handicrafts, traditional products, and promotional materials. Numerous African nations participate in the initiative, including Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Eswatini, Ghana, Libya, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, and Zambia.
The festival spans three intense days, alternating between official institutional moments and public events:
Afrosiciliana is more than just a showcase of music, flavors, and crafts: it is a meeting point for communities living in Sicily and a permanent laboratory for Mediterranean cooperation. The choice of Monrealeโa city that symbolizes the coexistence of different cultures thanks to its Arab-Norman heritageโmakes the event even more significant. Through exhibitions, performances, discussions, and gastronomy, the festival offers residents and visitors an authentic immersion into African cultures in the heart of Sicily.
The second edition of Afrosiciliana was held from May 24 to 26, 2026, between Monreale and Palermo, confirming the three-day format of cooperation, culture, and tourism between Sicily and Africa. The heart of the event was Piazza Guglielmo II, in front of the Monreale Cathedral, hosting the stalls of the participating countries.
International artists took to the stage, including the Ramzi Harrabi Ensemble and Ghinwa Ben Tara (Tunisia), Muphasah (Ghana), Jerusa Barros (Cape Verde), Chris Obehi (Nigeria), and Yannick Tiolo (Mauritius). The Afrosiciliana Cup youth soccer tournament was won by the Atletic Club, representing Zambia.
Monreale is located approximately 8 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the SS186; ample parking is available near the town center. By bus, the AMAT line connects Palermo (Piazza Indipendenza) to Monreale. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about 30 km away.
The festival takes place in open-air public spaces, with free access to the stalls and performances in Piazza Guglielmo II.
We recommend visiting the Monreale Cathedral and its cloister, both masterpieces of Arab-Norman art, and taking advantage of the show cooking and food stalls to savor authentic African cuisines.
