International music at the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, at the foot of the Gran Sasso
The Abbazie Summer Festival is the major summer concert series organized by Luzmek ETS - Concerti delle Abbazie, which brings life to dozens of towns in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, every year. It is a widespread, traveling festival that brings jazz, funk, soul, and contemporary world music to the most evocative locations in the region: medieval abbeys, cloisters, historic villages, and stunning natural settings. Within this circuit, the Municipality of Castel Castagna holds a prominent place, thanks to one of the most beloved venues in the entire program.
The concerts in Castel Castagna take place at the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, a splendid example of Abruzzo Romanesque architecture nestled in the local countryside, with the Gran Sasso massif serving as a natural backdrop. Founded in the Middle Ages and famous for its cycle of frescoes, the abbey becomes an enchanting open-air stage in the summer, where music dialogues with ancient stone and the landscape of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The festival, reaching its eleventh edition in 2026, is known for its ability to bring world-renowned names to Abruzzo while also promoting emerging musicians. Under the artistic direction of Maestro Carlo Michini, the festival has hosted international artists over the years, alternating between major headlining concerts, experimental evenings, and performances dedicated to world music and singer-songwriters.
What makes the Castel Castagna event unique is the blend of musical quality and territorial discovery. Each concert becomes an opportunity to experience authentic Abruzzo: the mountain landscape at the foot of the Gran Sasso, the food and wine traditions of the villages, and the rich historical and artistic heritage of the Teramo province. The setting of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, in particular, combines great music with the emotion of a place steeped in history and spirituality.
With its evenings in Castel Castagna, the Abbazie Summer Festival confirms its vocation not just as a music festival, but as a cultural project capable of telling the story and enhancing the identity of the Valle delle Abbazie.
The eleventh edition of the Abbazie Summer Festival, part of the broader Concerti delle Abbazie series directed by Maestro Carlo Michini, runs from June 28 to August 5, 2026, with over thirty concerts over forty-five days. In Castel Castagna, in the province of Teramo, the festival offers two exceptional evenings at the end of July.
The main setting is the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, with the Gran Sasso as a backdrop, considered one of the most evocative locations in the entire program. A second evening takes place in the historic village of Castel Castagna, with the possibility of dining among the town's alleys.
Castel Castagna is located in the mountainous hinterland of the province of Teramo, in Abruzzo, at the foot of the Gran Sasso. By car, it can be reached via the A24 motorway (Colledara-San Gabriele exit) or from the A14, heading inland. The Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano is located within the municipal territory, immersed in the countryside.
Concert tickets are available for purchase on Ciaotickets; some major events may also be managed via TicketOne. Early booking is recommended for the most anticipated evenings.
