The descent of the Comet Star that illuminates the Epiphany in Agerola
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
'A Nott d'a Stella is one of the most cherished traditions in Agerola, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, nestled in the Lattari Mountains between the Amalfi Coast and the Sarno Valley. Every year around the Epiphany, Piazza Generale Avitabile in the San Lazzaro district fills with people awaiting the main event: the slow descent of the large, illuminated Comet Star, which glides over the crowd to bring the Christmas festivities to a poignant close.
The event is organized by the Associazione Amici della Stella, which builds and renews the comet each year—the true symbol of the initiative. The festival is rooted in popular devotion to the Nativity scene and the journey of the Magi: the star that guided them to Bethlehem is recreated here in a light display suspended above the square. It is more than just a show; it is a collective ritual that brings together the families of Agerola and visitors from neighboring towns.
The evening, typically held in the late afternoon and early night, blends various forms of entertainment: the descent of the comet lit by thousands of LED lights, live music, carols, performances, a local food festival, and the arrival of the Befana, who hands out sweets to children. Local specialties are a highlight, with Lattari Mountains cheeses—from fiordilatte to Provolone del Monaco—taking center stage at the food stalls.
Known as the starting point of the famous Path of the Gods, Agerola is a popular destination year-round for its cool climate, panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast, and rural hospitality. In winter, the event is part of the wider local Christmas program, offering visitors a chance to discover the authentic face of this corner of Campania even in the colder season.
With over thirty years of history, 'A Nott d'a Stella has become a fixed date on the Agerola calendar and one of the most iconic events in the Province of Naples during the Epiphany period. The crowded square, the collective anticipation for the lighting and descent of the comet, and the warmth of a community gathering outdoors despite the chill of the Lattari Mountains speak to the deep bond between the town and this tradition, passed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 edition of 'A Nott d'a Stella takes place, according to tradition, around the Epiphany in Piazza Generale Avitabile in Agerola, Campania. At the moment, no detailed official program has been released for this edition: the event structure remains the established one, with the descent of the Comet Star as the central moment, accompanied by live music, a local food festival, and the arrival of the Befana for children. It is recommended to check dates and times with the Municipality of Agerola and the Associazione Amici della Stella.
Agerola can be reached by car from the Castellammare di Stabia motorway exit (A3), following the scenic Lattari Mountains road; alternatively, from the Amalfi Coast, driving up from Amalfi. By bus, SITA Sud connects Agerola with Amalfi, Castellammare di Stabia, and Naples. The event takes place in Piazza Generale Avitabile, in the San Lazzaro district.
The event is traditionally held around the Epiphany, on January 5th and 6th.
Access to the square is free. Winter clothing is recommended, given the altitude and evening temperatures.
