The world's most beautiful race crosses the Passo dell'Abetone
The 1000 Miglia is universally known as "the most beautiful race in the world," a definition famously coined by Enzo Ferrari. Born in 1927 as a speed race on the Brescia-Rome-Brescia circuit, today it lives on as a historical re-enactment reserved for cars built between 1927 and 1957โthe very models that took part in the original editions. Its passage through the Passo dell'Abetone, in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, is one of the most anticipated events for motor enthusiasts in the Abetone Cutigliano area.
The Municipality of Abetone Cutigliano, in the province of Pistoia, welcomes the caravan during the second stage of the race, which connects Padua to Montecatini Terme. The vehicles reach the mountain pass from Faidello and Fiumalbo, cross the famous Abetone resort, and stop at Piazzale Europa for the time control, where race officials stamp the crews' timecards.
The caravan is led by the Ferrari Tribute, featuring about 120 modern and vintage Ferraris, followed by over 400 historic cars entered in the race, arriving from dozens of different nations. The public gathers along the main road to admire legendary models from brands such as Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Maserati, and, of course, Ferrari. After the stop in Abetone, the cars continue downhill, passing through the hamlets of Le Regine, Pianosinatico, Pian dei Sisi, Casotti, and Ponte Sestaione before reaching Montecatini Terme.
The bond between the 1000 Miglia and the Pistoia mountains is deeply rooted in the history of the race itself: the Passo dell'Abetone, with its panoramic hairpin bends and forests of beech and fir trees, has always been one of the most spectacular and challenging sections of the route. For Abetone Cutigliano and the entire Tuscany region, the passage of the caravan is also a major tourism opportunity, attracting enthusiasts, photographers, and visitors from all over Italy and abroad to a unique natural setting in the Apennines.
The 2026 edition of the 1000 Miglia took place from June 9 to 13 along a figure-eight route of approximately 1,900 kilometers, with over 400 crews from numerous nations. The second stage, on Wednesday, June 10, connected Padua to Montecatini Terme, crossing the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Passo dell'Abetone.
In Abetone Cutigliano, the vehicles entered from Faidello and reached Piazzale Europa in Abetone: the Ferrari Tribute, with about 120 Ferraris, passed through starting at 3:30 PM, followed by the 430 historic cars from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM. After the time control stop, the cars continued downhill towards Le Regine, Pianosinatico, Pian dei Sisi, Casotti, and Ponte Sestaione, heading for the stage finish in Montecatini Terme.
Abetone Cutigliano can be reached by car via the SS12 Abetone and Brennero state road. The nearest train station is Pistoia, which is connected to the mountains by regular bus lines. The caravan's passage is concentrated at Piazzale Europa in Abetone.
The transit takes place in the late afternoon: the Ferrari Tribute opens the parade, followed by the historic cars until evening. The event is free; it is recommended to arrive early to find parking and a good spot along the route.
