Two nights of folk music and Irpinian flavors in the main square of Venticano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Zompa ca te passa is the festival that every summer, towards the end of August, turns Piazza Monumento ai Caduti in Venticano into an open-air stage dedicated to Southern folk music. The name, in local dialect, says it all: you dance until your worries fade away. Two evenings, starting around 9 PM, featuring frame drums, accordions, and tarantellas that mingle with the buzz of the crowd and the aroma of the food stalls.
We are in Irpinia, in the province of Avellino, in that hilly part of Campania nestled between the Apennines and the Calore Valley. Here, a village festival isn't just postcard folklore: it is the authentic way a community of a few thousand residents gathers at the end of summer, with families sitting at tables and young people dancing under the stage.
The formula is intentionally simple and has never changed: free admission to the square, a different band each night, and local tastings at the stalls. Over the years, the stage has hosted various Campanian and Irpinian folk groups—in 2025 Malamente and Spaccaprese, in 2024 Terra Nera and Mane e Mane, with DJ sets to close the night. The repertoire is strictly traditional: tammurriate, tarantellas, dance songs, and dialect tracks reworked with modern arrangements.
There are no barriers or numbered seats: you dance wherever you find space, often in a circle, and the square fills up progressively after dinner until late at night.
The gastronomic side is just as important as the music. The Pro Loco Venticanese stalls offer dishes from the Irpinian peasant tradition and local wines, in an area that is among the most renowned in Italy: we are just a few kilometers from the hills of Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo. Recurring highlights include:
Food and drinks are available for purchase at affordable village-festival prices; you can eat and drink while standing or at the tables set up in the square.
This is no improvised initiative: in 2024, the festival reached its eleventh edition, a sign that the event has become deeply rooted in the local summer calendar and is now part of provincial tourism promotion circuits, such as the Sistema Irpinia of the Province of Avellino. It is part of the Venticano summer, the municipal program that fills the squares of the Municipality of Venticano—Piazza Monumento ai Caduti, Piazza Santa Maria, Piazza Pio, and the Cavea Teatrale—with theater, cinema, sports, food festivals, and patronal feasts from July to September.
Those arriving in Venticano in August will almost always find more than one reason to stay. In the local calendar, "Zompa ca te passa" coexists with the historic Ham, Wine, and Lamb Festival, the summer theater season, and the patronal celebrations in September. It is worth checking the full program published by the Municipality and the Pro Loco before setting off, as the lineup changes from year to year and the specific dates are usually announced only a few weeks in advance.
It is a small festival that relies on authenticity rather than big names: well-played folk music, local food, and a genuine village square atmosphere. For those visiting Irpinia in summer—perhaps along an itinerary through the Taurasi wineries and the villages of the Calore Valley—it is the perfect opportunity to see how a Campanian town truly celebrates at the end of August, without any tourist filters.
At the time of writing, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of Zompa ca te passa in Venticano (province of Avellino, Campania). The municipal summer program "ViviAMO Venticano — Eventi Estate 2026", which runs from July to September 27th across Piazza Monumento ai Caduti, Piazza Santa Maria, Piazza Pio, and the Cavea Teatrale, does not mention the event by its usual name.
However, the month of August remains the reference period: in previous years, the festival has always taken place in the second half of the month, with evenings starting around 9 PM. To find out if and when the 2026 edition will take place, it is best to follow the official channels of the Pro Loco Venticanese and the Municipality of Venticano, which publish the program poster a few weeks before the event.
Piazza Monumento ai Caduti, in the center of Venticano (83030), province of Avellino, Campania.
By car: Venticano is located along the SS90 road; the main motorway connection is the A16 Naples-Canosa. The town is about twenty kilometers from Avellino and slightly more from Benevento. Parking is available in the streets adjacent to the square; it is advisable to arrive early on festival nights.
The evenings start around 9 PM and continue until late. Access to the square is free; food and drinks at the stalls are available for purchase.
Wear comfortable shoes: there will be dancing. Late August evenings in the hills can be cool, so a light sweater is useful. For updated dates, it is best to follow the social media channels of the Pro Loco Venticanese and the Municipality of Venticano, which publish the event poster a few weeks in advance.
