The winter feast of the Martyr in Palazzolo Acreide, held on January 20th in the heart of the Iblean Baroque
In the heart of the Iblean winter, on January 20th, Palazzolo Acreide renews its ancient devotion to Saint Sebastian, the Martyr and patron saint of the city. Unlike the grand summer festival in August, the January celebration commemorates more closely the dies natalis of the Saint—the day of his martyrdom—retaining a more collected and deeply spiritual character. It is one of the most heartfelt moments of the religious year for the community of Palazzolo Acreide, in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily.
Festivities begin on the evening of January 19th. After the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass, around 7:00 PM, the moving unveiling of the 17th-century statue of Saint Sebastian takes place, a highly anticipated moment that reveals the image of the Martyr to the faithful. Solemn Vespers follow, in an atmosphere of growing fervor that prepares the way for the solemnity of the following day.
The morning of the main day is marked by Holy Masses (at 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 AM), followed by the traditional blessing of the cuddure, the votive breads offered in honor of the Martyr as a symbol of sharing, devotion, and remembrance of the arduous agricultural cycle. In the late afternoon, at 6:30 PM, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration is held. Immediately after, at 7:30 PM, the village comes alive with the Exit and Procession of the Sacred Relics: the parade, accompanied by the notes of the Akrai Città di Palazzolo Acreide band, travels through the ancient historic streets until it reaches the evocative Piazza del Popolo, where the evening concludes with a moment of collective prayer and a fireworks display.
The heart of the feast is the Basilica of Saint Sebastian, a jewel of late Sicilian Baroque that rises at the top of a scenic staircase overlooking Piazza del Popolo. The building is part of the serial site of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The devotion to the Saint in Palazzolo is ancient, dating back to before 1414, the year associated with the miraculous arrival of the Martyr's image in Melilli, an event that spread the cult throughout the Iblean territory.
In Palazzolo Acreide, the devotion to Saint Sebastian has coexisted for centuries with that of Saint Paul: two cults, two churches, and two neighborhoods that the writer Giuseppe Fava described as the "two souls" of the town. Experiencing the winter feast means grasping this profound identity, immersed in the austere and fascinating atmosphere of an Iblean village in the dead of winter.
The 2026 winter feast was celebrated on January 19th and 20th in Palazzolo Acreide. On the evening of the eve, after the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass, the unveiling of the 17th-century statue at 7:00 PM opened the festivities, followed by Solemn Vespers presided over by the parish priest of the Mother Church.
On January 20th, the morning Holy Masses (7:30, 9:00, 11:00 AM) were followed by the blessing of the cuddure. At 6:30 PM, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration was presided over by Monsignor Ignazio Petriglieri, Vicar General of the Diocese of Noto; at 7:30 PM, the Exit and Procession of the Sacred Relics, accompanied by the Akrai Città di Palazzolo Acreide band, proceeded to Piazza del Popolo, with a moment of collective prayer and a fireworks display in the evening.
Palazzolo Acreide can be reached by car from Syracuse (about 45 km) via the SS124, or from Catania via the motorway and the internal Iblean road network. The festival takes place in the historic center, around the Basilica of Saint Sebastian in Piazza del Popolo.
The eve is January 19th, and the solemnity is January 20th. Celebrations and the procession of the relics are held in the evening.
Participation in religious celebrations and the procession is free of charge.
