About Walking through Irpinia

Walking through Irpinia is a day-long event that connects the villages of Castel Baronia and Carife in the province of Avellino on foot. The ten-kilometer route winds through ancient forests and scenic ridges, featuring a stop at the Samnite necropolis of Addolorata, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Carife, and tastings of local cheeses, cured meats, bread, and olive oil. It is a slow, convivial way to discover the Alta Irpinia region, far from the beaten tourist path.

A journey connecting two villages of the Baronia

Walking through Irpinia is a hiking event that links Castel Baronia and Carife, two small towns in the Baronia area, located in the eastern part of the Province of Avellino, in Campania. It is neither a race nor a simple walk: it is a full day built around the landscape, archaeology, and local cuisine, designed to showcase a corner of Alta Irpinia that rarely appears on tourist maps. The event is itinerant and reversible, having been organized in both the Castel Baronia-Carife direction and the reverse.

The route: about ten kilometers through forests and panoramas

The itinerary covers approximately ten kilometers in total—five out and five back—along ancient paths that cross centuries-old woods. The elevation gain is slight, and the terrain presents no technical difficulties; the organizers describe the route as fully accessible, suitable for both regular hikers and those new to trekking. In the clearings and along the ridges, the view opens up over the Ufita Valley and the hills of the Baronia di Vico, an agricultural landscape composed of wheat fields, olive groves, and isolated oak trees.

Trekking shoes are recommended, and hiking poles are optional for those who prefer them. Participation is by reservation only, with limited numbers to maintain the intimate and convivial character of the day.

The Samnite necropolis and the Archaeological Museum of Carife

The cultural heart of the event is the stop in Carife, where the group reaches the Samnite necropolis of Addolorata, one of the most significant archaeological sites in inland Irpinia, followed by a guided tour of the town's Archaeological Museum. The tombs and grave goods recovered from excavations tell the story of the daily lives of the Samnite and later Roman populations who inhabited these hills, covering social organization, funeral rites, and craftsmanship. It is a stop that adds depth to the walk, turning the excursion into an open-air history lesson.

Castel Baronia: Palazzo Mancini, the Sanctuary, and the historic center

The return to Castel Baronia is followed by guided tours of the village. The route passes through Palazzo Mancini—linked to the jurist and statesman Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, to whom the main square is also dedicated—the Sanctuary, and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The historic center preserves the compact layout typical of Alta Irpinia villages, with glimpses of stone portals and panoramas that open suddenly onto the surrounding countryside.

The flavors of the Baronia

Gastronomy is not just an accompaniment but a structural part of the program. Along the route and during the stops, there are tastings of typical products: local cheeses and cured meats paired with local wine, and at the end of the day, a tasting of bread and olive oil produced in the area. It is the most direct way to understand the agricultural economy of the Baronia—a land of wheat, olives, and livestock—and to meet the producers who keep it alive.

  • Baronia cheeses and cured meats
  • Irpinian local wine
  • Local bread and extra virgin olive oil

Who organizes it and who it is for

The initiative is promoted by NET - Association for the Promotion of Sustainable Irpinia, an organization working on the slow and sustainable enhancement of the inland villages of the Avellino province, in collaboration with the local administrations and cultural entities of Castel Baronia and Carife. The event is open to families, experienced hikers, and curious visitors alike: the pace is deliberately relaxed, with frequent stops.

Why it is worth participating

In a region where tourism is concentrated on the coast, the Baronia remains a territory to be discovered. Walking through Irpinia combines in a single day what usually requires multiple separate visits: nature, Samnite archaeology, historical architecture, and rustic cuisine. All this at a low cost and with simple logistics, without the need to travel by car between stages, as the walk itself connects the two towns.

Walking through Irpinia — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Walking through Irpinia between Castel Baronia and Carife has not yet been officially announced. In previous seasons, the event took place in the spring, with the May 18, 2025 edition, and in a winter version in December. Currently, there are no published dates, participation fees, or programs for 2026: the information provided here is therefore indicative and should be verified with the organizers.

As of the writing of this page, no official date has been published for the 2026 edition of Walking through Irpinia between Castel Baronia and Carife, in the province of Avellino. The most recent and documented reference remains the day of May 18, 2025, preceded by the version in the opposite direction, from Carife to Castel Baronia, in December 2024.

If the event is proposed again, it is reasonable to expect the same format: morning meeting in Castel Baronia, a walk of about five kilometers through the woods towards Carife, a visit to the Samnite necropolis of Addolorata and the Archaeological Museum, a return on foot, and an afternoon dedicated to guided tours of the village and tastings of local products. However, no details have been confirmed by the organizers.

We recommend following the channels of NET - Association for the Promotion of Sustainable Irpinia and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, where excursion dates are published a few weeks in advance. Reservation, in past editions, has always been mandatory and places limited.

Prices Walking through Irpinia 2026

2026 fee not communicated. In the May 18, 2025 edition, participation cost 16.00 euros per person, including the walk, guided tours, and tastings.
