About Voltaggio Carnival

Every February, the Voltaggio Carnival Festival brings the historic center of this small village in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont, to life. Organized by the Pro Loco Voltaggio, this free, popular event brings together young and old for costume parties, a children's parade, the cheerful 'pentolaccia' game, and a communal snack. It is an intimate and genuine gathering, perfect for experiencing Carnival away from the crowds, immersed in the authentic atmosphere of an Apennine village.

The Carnival of the village of Voltaggio

The Voltaggio Carnival Festival is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of this small village in the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont. Nestled in the Ligurian-Piedmontese Apennines, within the Capanne di Marcarolo Park, Voltaggio hosts two days of festivities in its historic center designed to involve the entire community, from children to adults, in an atmosphere of joy and togetherness.

A tradition managed by the Pro Loco

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Voltaggio, the association that has been enlivening village life for years with cultural and recreational initiatives. The Carnival is the perfect expression of this spirit: a popular, completely free festival open to everyone, capable of transforming the town's squares and streets into a stage of colors, costumes, and fun.

The festival program

The Voltaggio Carnival is divided into two distinct and complementary moments, designed to suit every age group:

  • Adults' costume party: the first evening kicks off with a party dedicated to adults, featuring music, costumes, and good cheer in one of the local venues.
  • Children's costume parade: the following day is primarily dedicated to children, who take center stage in the traditional costume parade along the streets of the historic center.
  • Pentolaccia: the classic 'pentolaccia' game, a staple of Piedmontese Carnivals, provides moments of pure joy for the little ones at the local club.
  • Communal snack: to close the festivities, a shared snack brings families and visitors together in a convivial gesture typical of village festivals.

A village-scale Carnival

What makes the Voltaggio Carnival Festival special is its intimate and familiar scale. Far from the spectacle of large Carnivals, here the festival retains its most authentic meaning: meeting up, dressing up, and celebrating together. It is the ideal opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Piedmont, among the stone houses of the village, the Roman bridge over the Lemme stream, and the natural setting of the Apennines.

Why attend

Those looking for a genuine, free, and family-friendly Carnival will find a warm and welcoming experience in Voltaggio. Its proximity to the Genoa area and easy accessibility make the village an interesting destination for a day trip during the Carnival season.
