The UISP race that enters the Rebibbia women's prison, bridging sport, rights, and inclusion.
Vivicittà Open Doors is the special edition of the national Vivicittà race, which takes place annually inside correctional facilities across dozens of Italian cities. In Rome, in the Lazio region, the most symbolic event is held at the "Germana Stefanini" Women's Correctional Facility in the Rebibbia district. Since 1993, UISP (Italian Union for Sport for All) has brought sport beyond the bars, allowing inmates to run alongside athletes and runners from the outside.
The Rebibbia stage serves as the prologue to the historic Vivicittà event, a race that every spring simultaneously energizes dozens of cities throughout Italy and several locations abroad. While the public runs on classic city routes, the race inside correctional facilities takes on a deeper meaning: creating concrete opportunities for meeting, understanding, and sharing between those in detention and the outside community.
The message that Vivicittà continues to convey with strength is the importance of physical activity even in the most complex contexts, such as prison. Sport becomes a fundamental tool for physical and mental well-being, capable of fostering inclusion and guiding inmates toward reintegration into civil society.
The event aligns with the core values of UISP: peace, rights, and solidarity. The vision is one of sport without economic, social, or cultural barriers, accessible to everyone.
Vivicittà Open Doors in Rebibbia is much more than a race: it is a collective gesture that reaffirms the right to sport as a fundamental right of citizenship. For the city of Rome, the initiative has become a symbol over the years of how social sport can build bridges between seemingly distant realities, bringing a moment of celebration, participation, and hope inside prison walls.
On the morning of Friday, April 10, 2026, with the arrival of runners at 9:30 AM, the "Germana Stefanini" Women's Correctional Facility hosted the Rome stage of Vivicittà Open Doors. Inmates ran and shared moments of physical activity alongside athletes, runners, and volunteers from UISP Rome, in the presence of Prison Police personnel and the facility's management.
The day also hosted the national presentation of Vivicittà 2026, marking the start of the event. The Rebibbia race served as the prologue to the national edition, which took place on Sunday, April 12, in approximately 40 cities with a 9:30 AM start and live coverage on Radio 1 Rai. Initiatives in correctional facilities continued in other Italian cities in the following weeks.
The race in the women's prison opened the Vivicittà weekend, with the national edition taking place on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
