Varzo Carnival: The playful soul of the Divedro Valley

Every winter, the village of Varzo, located in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province and the heart of the Divedro Valley, transforms for the Varzo Carnival, the most beloved and well-attended festival of the year. Masks, floats, music, and local traditions bring the streets and Piazzale Trieste to life, where the community gathers around flavors and rituals passed down through generations.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Valle Divedro, with the support of the local parish, the Municipality of Varzo, the Carnival Groups, the Varzo-Trasquera Alpine Group, and the Palio Committee: a collective effort that highlights how deeply this carnival is rooted in the entire Ossola territory.

Parades, masks, and mountain flavors

The most anticipated moment is the parade of masked groups, which winds through the village with color, joy, and creativity. Before the parade begins, one of the public's favorite traditions takes place in Piazzale Trieste: the serving of polenta, sausages, and stew—hearty dishes perfect for the cold February days, available to enjoy on-site or as a takeaway. There is also plenty of entertainment for children and face painting, making the festival perfect for the whole family.

The 'Asino', the satirical spirit of the carnival

The most distinctive feature of the Varzo Carnival is its ironic and irreverent streak. During the festivities, the satirical newspaper 'Asino' is published, lightheartedly poking fun at local events and personalities. The carnival concludes with the presentation of the 'Asino d'Oro' award, a playful honor crowning the most talked-about figure of the year in Varzo. This cheerful self-deprecation sets the Varzo Carnival apart from many others, making it an unmissable event in the valley. The program also includes high-altitude activities, such as masked events at Alpe Ciamporino, where the festival meets the mountains and the slopes of the Divedro Valley.
