The open-air barbecue that sparks spring in Salza Irpina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Vampa a l'Angilo is the festival that, every year in early May, lights up the center of Salza Irpina, a tiny town in the province of Avellino, in Campania. The name, in the local Irpinian dialect, combines 'vampa'โthe large open-air bonfireโwith the reference to 'Angilo', the Angel: the feast of the apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel falls on May 8th and is linked throughout Irpinia to the lighting of ritual fires on the eve of the day. The entire community gathers around the flames for an evening of conviviality that symbolically marks the transition from winter to the warmer season.
The heart of the event is the barbecue in the square: the massive woodpile is lit at dusk, serving as both a cooking station and a gathering point. The Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee, which promotes the initiative, prepares traditional local dishes and whole spit-roasted pig, paired with local wine. Guests eat and drink at outdoor tables, then dance until late; the 2024 edition featured the 'Spaghetti Style' DJ set and a seven-piece band dedicated to 1940s and 1950s Italo-American swing.
The festival is held in the heart of the village, between Piazza Michele Capozzi and the municipal amphitheater on Via Tufello, the same spaces that host other events during the Salza summer. The areas are flat and accessible, with parking nearby: a simple, popular format designed to welcome families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns without barriers or formalities.
Vampa a l'Angilo is not an isolated event: it opens the calendar of the Primavera Salzese, a series of events that transforms the village into a small capital of Irpinian flavors within a few weeks. The seasonal program usually includes:
Visitors from out of town can plan multiple trips to discover the village's entire gastronomic repertoire in just a few weeks.
Lighting community fires is one of the oldest constants in Irpinian popular culture: from the 'focaroni' of the Immaculate Conception in December to the 'vampe' of May, fire marks the calendar of the villages and serves as a signal of rebirth, aggregation, and belonging. In Salza Irpina, this heritage has been recovered and reinterpreted in a contemporary key while keeping the original gesture intact: burning wood together, sharing food, and staying in the square until nightfall.
The initiative is promoted by the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee, with the support of the Pro Loco Ciao Salza, the Youth Forum, and the local citizenry, and with the patronage of the Municipal Administration of Salza Irpina. It is an event entirely self-produced by the village, without major external sponsors: this is precisely why it retains an authentic character, far removed from commercial food festivals.
For those visiting Irpinia in spring, Vampa a l'Angilo is the easiest way to truly connect with the life of a Campanian village: no tickets, no monumental stages, just a fire lit in the square, the scent of spit-roasted pig, wine poured at the tables, and a community coming together. Salza Irpina is about twenty kilometers from Avellino and is located a short distance from the lands of Fiano and Greco di Tufo: a weekend here allows you to combine popular tradition, food and wine, and hilly landscapes.
For 2026, no official dates have been released so far for the Vampa a l'Angilo in Salza Irpina. The reference remains the usual period of early May, when the village in the province of Avellino lights the large bonfire in the square and opens the season of village festivals.
The Salza spring calendar for 2026 has, however, seen the confirmation of the Asparagus Festival, a sign that the activity of the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee and the Pro Loco continues regularly. Those wishing to participate can follow the channels of the Municipality of Salza Irpina and local associations, where the poster is usually published a few weeks before the event.
As always, the event includes the collective barbecue, traditional Irpinian dishes, local wine, and music in the square, with free admission.
