The grand gathering of the Ossola 'black feathers', hosted in Bannio Anzino for its 19th edition
The Valle Anzasca Alpine Troops Gathering is the most heartfelt event for the 'black feathers' (Alpini) of the upper Ossola. Organized since 2007 by the seven Alpine groups of the valley together with the ANA Section of Domodossola, it is held every year around June 2nd, Republic Day, rotating among the various municipalities of the Valle Anzasca, the deep valley that rises from Piedimulera up to Macugnaga, at the foot of the east face of Monte Rosa.
In 2026, the Municipality of Bannio Anzino, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Piedmont), hosted the event for its 19th edition. This was no coincidence: the Bannio Anzino Alpine Group, founded in 1920, is among the oldest in the Ossola region and celebrated its centenary in 2020.
The gathering is not just a festival for one village, but for the entire valley: it involves the communities of Bannio Anzino, Calasca, Castiglione, Ceppo Morelli, Cimamulera, Fornareco, Macugnaga, Pestarena, and Vanzone con San Carlo. It is a long weekend that weaves together memory, Alpine tradition, and village life, with the laying of floral tributes at war memorials, flag-raising ceremonies, Holy Masses, mountain choirs, and brass bands accompanying the parade along the streets of the historic center.
For the Alpini of the Valle Anzasca, the gathering is also a way to keep the group's symbolic places alive: from the small Alpine church of Alpe Provaccio, inaugurated in 1986, to the Remembrance Park. Official ceremonies, awards, and convivial moments—the Alpine dinner on Saturday and the gathering lunch on Sunday under the Crus Canton marquee—make this event an opportunity to meet, remember the fallen, and renew the spirit of solidarity that has always characterized the 'black feathers'.
Those who travel to the Valle Anzasca during the gathering will find a free event, open to all, immersed in the landscapes of the Ossola mountains. The highlight remains June 2nd, with the meeting at the Panera locality in Bannio, the parade accompanied by the Ossola Alpine Brass Band, and the Holy Mass in the parish church.
Bannio Anzino can be reached from Domodossola along the Valle Anzasca road (SP166), heading towards Macugnaga. From Milan or Turin, take the A26 motorway to Gravellona Toce, then the SS33 del Sempione towards Domodossola and then the valley.
The gathering takes place over several days between late May and early June. The main day is June 2nd, with a meeting at 9:00 AM in the Panera locality and Holy Mass at 10:30 AM.
Free event. Reservations are required for the convivial meals (Alpine dinner and gathering lunch).
