Two days of art, excursions, and devotion in the churches of Val Tidone
Val Tidone - The Sacred Places is an event that blends art, spirituality, and hiking in the territory of Borgonovo Val Tidone, in the province of Piacenza, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Promoted by the Val Tidone Historical Cultural Committee, the initiative guides visitors to discover the ancient churches and minor chapels of the valley, guardians of centuries of history and popular devotion.
The event unfolds over two days. On Saturday, it opens with the inauguration of an art exhibition at Torre Breno, an ancient fortress of the area, followed by a free guided tour of the complex. Sunday is the main day: the guided excursion "From Church to Church along the Tidone Trail" departs from Bilegno, leading walkers through rural landscapes and places of worship.
Val Tidone, stretching between the Piacenza hills bordering Lombardy, preserves a dense network of ancient churches and rural chapels that testify to the territory's ancient religious organization. The event stems from the commitment of the newly formed Val Tidone Historical Cultural Committee, supported by local associations such as the Italian Touring Club, the Borgonovo Alpini Group, the Pro Loco Borgonovo, and the associations "La Strada dei Mulini" and "Sentiero del Tidone APS".
The event's formula combines the pleasure of slow walking along the valley's trails with the discovery of local artistic and architectural heritage. The excursions, accompanied by environmental guides, allow visitors to experience the Val Tidone landscape authentically, while the extraordinary church openings and historical conferences offer an in-depth understanding of the religious and cultural identity of this corner of Emilia-Romagna.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, offered a rich calendar of events in the hamlets of Borgonovo Val Tidone.
On Saturday, it opened with the inauguration of the exhibition "Timeless Tales" by sculptor Giuseppe Tirelli at Torre Breno, presented by Tiziana Pisati, followed by a free guided tour of the fortress.
On Sunday, the guided excursion "From Church to Church along the Tidone Trail" departed from Bilegno. From 10 AM to 5:30 PM, the churches of San Giorgio di Bilegno, SS. Giacomo e Filippo di Bruso, and Sant'Ilario di Breno were open to the public. At 11:15 AM, Holy Mass was held in Bilegno, with a refreshment point organized by the Alpini Group, and an exhibition of ancient agricultural tools, parchment copies, and a photographic exhibition on the Tidone Trail. At 4:00 PM, historian Giacomo Nicelli gave a talk on a medieval parchment related to daily life in Bilegno.
Borgonovo Val Tidone can be reached by car from Piacenza via the SP412 towards Val Tidone (approx. 25 km). The hamlets of Bilegno and Breno, venues of the event, are located in the immediate vicinity of the municipal seat.
The guided excursion requires mandatory booking. For information and registration: tel./WhatsApp +39 329 7265227, e-mail [email protected]. Guided tours of Torre Breno and church openings are free. The refreshment point at the Bruso church offers a set menu by reservation.
