About Tufo Greco Festival

Every September, the small village of Tufo, in the heart of Irpinia, becomes the capital of Greco di Tufo DOCG. The Tufo Greco Festival fills the historic center's alleys with tasting stalls, masterclasses led by sommeliers and experts, food stands serving traditional Irpinian dishes, meetings with producers, and evening concerts in Piazza Umberto I. Now in its 39th edition as of 2025, this historic event celebrates the deep connection between Campania's most famous white wine, the soils of the Sabato Valley, and the area's ancient sulfur mines.

The Tufo Greco Festival, the celebration of Irpinia's most famous white wine

Every year in early September, the village of Tufo—home to just over seven hundred residents in the hills of the Sabato Valley, in the Province of Avellino—transforms for three days into the capital of Greco di Tufo DOCG. The Tufo Greco Festival is one of the longest-running food and wine events in Campania: in 2025, it reached its 39th edition, cementing its status as a must-attend event for enthusiasts, sommeliers, and curious visitors alike.

An entire village turned into an open-air winery

The festival doesn't take place in a fairground but within the village's historic center: tasting stalls, food stands, and stages are scattered throughout alleys, courtyards, and squares, with Piazza Umberto I serving as the hub for evening musical performances. Guided tours lead visitors through the village's narrow streets, while local producers share stories of the harvest and winemaking. It is a formula that allows you to understand, glass in hand, why this wine is born right here.

Guided tastings, masterclasses, and meetings with producers

The program revolves entirely around wine. In recent editions, masterclasses have been curated by AIS Campania – Avellino and ONAF, featuring producers in attendance and offering sensory journeys focused on pairings between Greco di Tufo DOCG and artisan cheeses; the workshops are held at the “Sandro Pertini” Multifunctional Center. Alongside the masterclasses, there are guided tastings led by sommeliers and oenologists, a wine shop showcasing local wineries—including sparkling wines and spirits—and afternoon meetings with producers, technicians, and industry journalists.

  • Tasting stalls featuring Greco di Tufo DOCG wineries, along with local sparkling wines and spirits
  • Masterclasses hosted by AIS Campania – Avellino and ONAF, dedicated to wine and cheese pairings
  • Food stands serving pasta dishes, grilled meats, fried specialties, and typical Irpinian products
  • Guided tours of the historic center's alleys and meetings with producers
  • Concerts and DJ sets every evening, plus a musical lunch on Sunday

Irpinian cuisine pairings

A large area is dedicated to food: the dishes at the stands are designed to pair perfectly with the local white wine, ranging from traditional peasant-style pasta dishes to grilled meats, fried treats, and local cheeses and cured meats. It is a wonderful way to sample the gastronomic repertoire of this inland part of Campania in just one weekend.

More than just September: the “Sotto le Stelle” preview and the Winter Edition

Over the years, the event has expanded beyond the September weekend. The “Sotto le Stelle” (Under the Stars) preview is held in the San Paolo hamlet, in Piazzetta San Paolo, near the night of San Lorenzo: in 2025, it took place on August 8th, from 7 PM to midnight, featuring Greco di Tufo DOCG tastings, local food, and live music—including a concert by Erminio Sinni, winner of The Voice Senior 2020, followed by a DJ set by Luca Frisetti. In December, a “Winter Edition” is scheduled, bringing the festival's tasting format to the village in a winter setting.

Greco di Tufo DOCG, the gold of Irpinia

Greco di Tufo is one of the most appreciated Italian white wines worldwide and is produced exclusively in eight municipalities in the Province of Avellino, including Tufo, which gives the denomination its name. The grape variety is traditionally linked to the settlers of Magna Graecia, while the wine's characteristic mineral profile is attributed to the nature of the soils and the village's historic relationship with the ancient sulfur mines of the Sabato Valley. Telling the story of this intersection between geology, industrial history, and viticulture is one of the festival's stated ambitions.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Municipality of Tufo with the support of the Campania Region, in collaboration with Tufo Social Lab and the Terre di Tufo Consortium, and is part of the food and wine circuit promoted by the Province of Avellino.
