A road race in the heart of Baroque Catania, blending sport and devotion
The Trofeo Sant'Agata is one of the most fascinating road races in Sicily: an international road race held on a city circuit in the historic center of Catania, during the days when the city celebrates its patron saint. The event is part of the official Agatine celebrations and the so-called Settimana dello Sport Agatino, an extraordinary program of sporting events accompanying the festivities in early February.
The start and finish lines are located on Via Vittorio Emanuele II, near the Palazzo della Cultura, where runners tackle a loop of approximately 1,400 meters. The course touches some of the most evocative streets of Baroque Catania, including Via Ventimiglia, the area around the Teatro Massimo Bellini, Via Antonino di Sangiuliano, and the famous Via Etnea. Men complete seven laps for a total of 9,800 meters, while women complete four laps, totaling 5,600 meters. The race concludes with the arrival of the winners, while other athletes are ranked based on the number of laps completed.
The race was founded in 1960 as the Coppa di Sant'Agata and became an international event in 1966, opening its doors to foreign athletes. Its long list of winners includes legendary names in Italian athletics such as Franco Arese, Salvatore Antibo, and Stefano Baldini, alongside Soviet and Kenyan champions. After several interruptions and a long hiatus, the Trofeo returned in February 2023, immediately reclaiming its prominent place in the national running calendar.
The event is organized by Atletica Sicilia with the patronage of the Municipality of Catania, the Committee for the Feast of Sant'Agata, FIDAL Sicilia, and CONI Sicilia. Running the Trofeo means immersing yourself in a truly unique atmosphere: high-level sport intertwines with popular devotion, the faithful in their white saccu robes, and the city's most heartfelt festival. For athletics enthusiasts and tourists alike, it is a unique opportunity to experience Catania—in the heart of Sicily—during one of its most intense moments.
