The Masked Parade and the Rioni Palio in the heart of the city
The Trieste Carnival is one of the most cherished festivals in the Julian city: for several days, the center fills with masks, allegorical floats, music, and colors, culminating in the grand Masked Parade, the procession that awards the Palio del Corso among the city's rioni. Organized by the Municipality of Trieste with the involvement of associations and neighborhoods, it's an event that unites generations and traditions.
The heart of the event is the grand parade that starts from Piazza Oberdan and crosses the city center to Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the most spectacular squares in Europe overlooking the sea. The rioni (neighborhoods) compete with floats, choreography, and masked groups on ever-new themes, vying for victory in the Palio in an atmosphere of healthy rivalry and creativity.
The Trieste Carnival is not just the main parade: it preserves deeply rooted neighborhood traditions, such as the Corso delle Serve in Servola, the ancient district linked to the city's popular and Mitteleuropean culture, which takes place on Fat Thursday. It is these minor rituals that give the Trieste Carnival its authentic and composite identity.
With parades, masked parties, events for children, and scattered events in the neighborhoods, the Carnival transforms Trieste into an open-air stage. It's the ideal opportunity to experience the city during one of its most joyful moments, while also discovering the traditions that make it unique in the Italian panorama.
The 2026 edition of the Trieste Carnival enlivens the city from February 8th to 18th, with the 32nd Masked Parade at its core. The main procession, scheduled for February 17th, starts from Piazza Oberdan and descends towards Piazza Unità d'Italia, where the rioni compete for the Palio del Corso. Among the neighborhood traditions, the Corso delle Serve of Servola on Fat Thursday stands out.
The detailed route, times, and list of participating rioni will be published by the Municipality of Trieste in the weeks prior.
