About Translation of the Cross

The Translation of the Cross is the ceremony that closes the Palio cycle of Legnano. After the Palio race, Ariberto's Cross - a symbol of victory - is solemnly transferred from the Basilica of San Magno to the church of the District that won the edition, where it will be kept for a year. It is a sober and deeply felt rite by the contrada members, which symbolically seals the Palio season and accompanies the trophy to its new home until the following May.

The rite that closes the Palio

The Translation of the Cross is one of the Ceremonial Rites of the Palio di Legnano, in the Municipality of Legnano (Province of Milan). It is the last ceremony of the Palio cycle: after the race at the end of May, Ariberto's Cross, the trophy won by the victorious District, is carried in procession from the Basilica of San Magno - the city's religious heart - to the church of the triumphant District.

A symbolic transfer

The ceremony holds strong identity value for the community of Legnano. The Cross remains in custody in the winning District for the whole year, until, on the eve of the next Palio, it will be returned to be put back into play. The Translation is therefore both a moment of celebration for the winning contrada members and a closing rite that connects one edition of the Palio to the next, keeping alive the bond between faith, history, and tradition that characterizes the entire Legnano event.

Translation of the Cross — edition 2026

The 2026 Translation of the Cross is the final Ceremonial Rite of the Palio cycle. Ariberto's Cross is transferred from the Basilica of San Magno to the church of the winner of the 2026 Palio, in a solemn ceremony open to the public.

On June 5, 2026, the Translation of the Cross takes place, officially closing the Palio cycle of the 2026 edition of the Palio di Legnano. Ariberto's Cross leaves the Basilica of San Magno to reach the church of the District that won the Palio, where it will be kept for a year.
