Sunset show on the Apprezzami l'Asino trail in Sapri
Tramonti d'Autore is one of the most recognizable summer events in Sapri, a town on the Gulf of Policastro in the province of Salerno, at the southern tip of Cilento, in Campania. The concept is essential and that is why it works: choose a panoramic spot, set the start time for when the light changes — 7:30 PM — and let the sun setting over the sea serve as the backdrop for the show. There is no theater, no tent: just a platform suspended over the coast and an audience seated facing the gulf.
The event takes place on the first access platform of the «Apprezzami l'Asino» trail, one of the symbolic places of the Sapri area and one of the most popular destinations for summer visitors. The path, now a trekking route leading towards the Torre di Mezzanotte, was originally the road that connected Sapri and Maratea before the modern coastal road was built. The curious name, which has entered the local lexicon, refers to passages so narrow that two loaded animals could not pass each other without difficulty.
Bringing a show to this spot means giving the audience two things at once: the event and the view. Attendees do not just watch the stage, but also the coastline, the sea of the gulf, and the profiles of the mountains that close the horizon towards Basilicata.
The evening's formula alternates between different styles, with the goal of bringing together families, residents, and tourists. It generally begins with a musical moment featuring local voices, continues with a comedy segment to lighten the mood, and concludes with a social gathering: spectators are given an aperitif box to enjoy at the end of the show, still on the platform, as the light fades completely.
Tramonti d'Autore was born and grew within the Pro Loco Sapri calendar, the association that has been building the city's summer program for years with a deliberately popular and accessible approach. Alongside this event, the association organizes other events that have become hallmarks of the community: La Notte della Spigolatrice, which recalls the figure made famous by the verses of Luigi Mercantini, and Il Bivacco dei 300, a costumed prologue to the re-enactment of the landing of Carlo Pisacane, a Risorgimento episode that forever linked the name of Sapri to the history of Italy.
Continuity is the distinctive trait: Tramonti d'Autore returns every year, changing artists but not its approach, and has now consolidated itself as a stable presence of the Sapri summer.
It is an event you can enjoy even without knowing the artists on the bill, because the value lies in the whole: the place, the time, the local audience, the food shared at the end. For those on vacation in southern Cilento or along the Gulf of Policastro, it is also a way to discover a place — the Apprezzami l'Asino trail — that deserves a second visit in the daylight, perhaps at dawn, when the climb towards the Torre di Mezzanotte is less strenuous.
Sapri closes the Cilento coast to the south and acts as the small capital of the gulf: a railway station on the Tyrrhenian line, a tourist port, the Lungomare Italia, and a consolidated tradition of summer hospitality. The city is the natural base for those who want to move between Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Maratea, and in summer it concentrates a dense calendar of free or low-cost appointments. Tramonti d'Autore represents its spirit well: few pretensions, great attention to the landscape and participation.
Appointment confirmed for 2026: the Pro Loco Sapri, led by president Luana Ficarra, brought Tramonti d'Autore back to the first platform of the Apprezzami l'Asino trail on Sunday, July 26, at 7:30 PM, in front of a large audience.
The evening opened with the voice of Rosa Liano, a young talent from Torraca, and continued with the comedy group Gli Improstori, who entertained the public with sketches dedicated to the little absurdities of daily life. At the end of the show, spectators received the aperitif box, which they enjoyed on-site while taking in the view of the Gulf of Policastro after sunset.
The event confirmed itself as one of the most anticipated appointments of the summer calendar in Sapri, in the province of Salerno, along with the Notte della Spigolatrice on August 8 and the Bivacco dei 300 on August 21, both signed by the same Pro Loco.
