Non-competitive bikepacking between Syracuse and the Val di Noto
The Trail del Barocco is a non-competitive bikepacking event that starts and finishes in Syracuse, in the heart of southeastern Sicily. Organized by the ASD Quasi Bikers Siracusa, it features a loop of approximately 175-190 km with over 2,400 meters of elevation gain on trails, gravel roads, and quiet secondary paths. This is not a race: there are no rankings or time limits, only a GPS track to follow independently, discovering the UNESCO-listed Baroque towns of the Val di Noto.
The format combines a prologue and two main stages. The first day is dedicated to a cycling-photography treasure hunt through the narrow alleys of Ortigia, the Baroque historic center of Syracuse. The following two days take participants from Syracuse to Ferla and back, passing through iconic locations such as the Pantalica Nature Reserve, the Anapo Valley Greenway, Sortino, Cassaro, Buscemi, Palazzolo Acreide, and the scenic landscapes of the Val di Noto.
The Trail del Barocco is open to anyone who loves off-road cycling: mountain bikes, gravel bikes, e-bikes, and trekking bikes are all welcome. The event celebrates not only sport but also the cultural, natural, and gastronomic dimensions of the Syracuse province, with stops, local hospitality, and social moments along the route.
Set between the Municipality of Syracuse and the mountain villages of the Syracuse province in southeastern Sicily, the Trail del Barocco is the ideal way to discover a territory that encompasses some of the masterpieces of Sicilian Baroque recognized by UNESCO, from the golden stone of Ortigia to the rock-hewn landscapes of Pantalica.
The 2026 edition of the Trail del Barocco confirms the format of a prologue plus two stages, with start and finish in Syracuse during the weekend of April 10-12, 2026. The loop route touches some of the most evocative places in southeastern Sicily: from the island of Ortigia to the mountain villages of Sortino, Ferla, Cassaro, Buscemi, and Palazzolo Acreide, reaching the scenic views of the Val di Noto and the Pantalica Reserve.
As per tradition, the event is non-competitive: no rankings, no stopwatches, just a GPS track to follow independently. Participants receive the GPX track and service maps one week before the start.
Welcome for participants with a cycling-photography treasure hunt through the narrow alleys of the Baroque historic center of Ortigia. Refreshments provided, race pack distribution, and briefing on the two stages.
Syracuse is accessible by car via the A18/RA15 motorway; the nearest airport is Catania Fontanarossa, about an hour away. The Syracuse railway station is connected to all major Sicilian cities.
The event is non-competitive and open to MTB, gravel, e-bike, and trekking bikes. One week before the start, participants receive the final GPX track via email, along with maps of meeting points, parking, and useful services. For registration and fees, please visit the official website traildelbarocco.it.
As this is a long route with elevation gain on mixed terrain, good preparation and a bike suitable for off-road use are recommended. Bring a repair kit and water supplies.
