Evening excursion through the ravine and rock churches of Palagianello
The Magic of Fireflies is a recurring nature event organized by the association I Portulani - I guardiani del borgo antico in the town of Palagianello, in the province of Taranto, in the heart of the Puglia ravine region. Every spring, when the bioluminescence phenomenon reaches its peak, the association leads small groups along an evening itinerary that combines hiking, history, and nature observation.
The meeting point is at the Palagianello Info Point on Via Roma. The excursion begins at sunset with a guided tour of the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, a building carved into the tuff rock overlooking the canyon, and the nearby rock church of San Girolamo, which houses 14th-century frescoes. From there, the group descends into the ravine of Palagianello, a spectacular canyon where Mediterranean vegetation intertwines with an ancient rock-hewn village.
As darkness falls, the excursion transforms into a moment of anticipation and wonder. Sheltered from light pollution, participants watch in silence as fireflies dance among the vegetationโa natural phenomenon linked to the courtship of these insects. Guides ask that no torches, flashes, or phones be used to respect the ecosystem and avoid disturbing the animals. As this is a spontaneous natural phenomenon, the presence and number of fireflies can never be guaranteed.
The route is classified as tourist-hiking level, with medium difficulty, and is suitable for children aged 5-6 and up. Hiking shoes with non-slip soles and comfortable clothing with long trousers are required; trekking poles are recommended. Booking is always mandatory, and places are limited.
The initiative highlights one of the most characteristic landscapes of the Taranto area: the gravine (ravines), deep limestone incisions that mark the Murgia plateau and host rock settlements, churches carved into the rock, and rich biodiversity. Through these excursions, I Portulani promote slow, respectful tourism that allows visitors to rediscover the history and nature of the ancient village of Palagianello.
In 2026, The Magic of Fireflies excursions were held in Palagianello (Taranto) from May 8 to 31, with sessions repeated every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday between 6:00 PM and 9:30 PM. The meeting point was at the Info Point on Via Roma.
