About The Furrow of Saint Michael

At dawn on September 29th, the feast day of Saint Michael the Archangel, the countryside of Sturno comes alive for one of the most evocative rural rituals in Irpinia: the tracing of the straight furrow. A plow, once pulled by oxen and now by a tractor, carves a perfectly straight line into the earth, symbolizing the "straight path" indicated by the Archangel. Families, children dressed as little angels, adults in period costumes, and visitors from neighboring towns gather around the furrow in a celebration of devotion, hard work, and rural memory.

A rural ritual at dawn, in the heart of Irpinia

Every year, in the countryside on the outskirts of Sturno, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is marked by an ancient gesture: the tracing of the furrow. In the local dialect, it is called «lo surco re l'Angelo», the Angel's furrow. At the first light of dawn, farmers, enthusiasts, and curious onlookers gather on the fields at the edge of the village to witness the plowing of a perfectly straight line, carved into the earth in honor of the patron saint.

How the straight furrow is traced

The ritual is not just simple plowing. Before starting, the plumb-lining (piombatura) takes place: using an instrument similar to the ancient Roman groma, reference points are set to ensure the perfect straightness of the path. Only then does the plow go into action. Once pulled by powerful oxen, the task is now entrusted to a tractor, but the technical difficulty remains the same: keeping the furrow straight for hundreds of meters without deviation is a skill passed down from father to son.

  • Plumb-lining: aligning the path using traditional tools.
  • Plowing: carving the furrow at dawn, under the eyes of the community.
  • Costumes: children dressed as little angels and adults in period clothing accompany the ritual.
  • Ritual lunch: at the end, the community gathers at the table, a reward for those who participated in the labor.

The symbolic meaning

For the people of Sturno, the furrow is a propitiatory gesture: it represents the «straight path» indicated by Saint Michael, the line to follow in life as in the work of the fields. Over time, the number of furrows traced has grown from one to seven or nine, numbers with strong symbolic value. Some also see in that line a reference to the so-called Sacred Line of Saint Michael, the imaginary axis that connects the great Michaelic sanctuaries from Ireland to the Holy Land.

A nationally recognized heritage

In 2026, the tracing of the straight furrow was inscribed in the National Register dedicated to rural landscapes of historical interest and traditional practices, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry. It is a recognition shared with other Italian villages that preserve similar rituals—including Castelfranco in Miscano, Caiazzo, Nepi, Foligno, and Valentano—gathered in the «Borghi del Solco» (Villages of the Furrow) network. On May 8, 2026, the municipal auditorium of Sturno hosted a conference of the same name, featuring speeches by scholars and administrators, the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the participating municipalities, and a tasting of local specialties.

The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel

The tracing is part of the festivities for the patron saint of Sturno, which center around September 29th and 30th with religious celebrations and civil events: solemn masses, moments of prayer, concerts, and evenings in the square. In the «E-State Sturnese» program, the municipality's summer calendar running from June to September, the furrow ritual is the event that closes the season and brings the village back to its agricultural roots.

Who keeps the tradition alive

The ritual is primarily guarded by the «Il Solco» Cultural Association, which has been documenting it for decades through publications, conferences, and video materials, in collaboration with the Municipality of Sturno, the parish, and local associations. Thanks to this work, a rural custom has transformed into an event of great anthropological interest, capable of attracting visitors from neighboring provinces and scholars of folk traditions.

Why it is worth attending

The Furrow of Saint Michael is not a show built for tourists: it is a living ritual, practiced by a community that truly believes in it. Those who arrive in Sturno before dawn find the mist over the Irpinian fields, the smell of freshly turned earth, and the silence broken only by the engine of the plow and the cry «Long live Saint Michael!». It is one of the most authentic ways to understand what the rural civilization of the Campanian Apennines still means today.

The Furrow of Saint Michael — edition 2026

In 2026, the straight furrow ritual will return to Sturno for the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, as part of the «E-State Sturnese» program announced by the Municipality from June to September. At the moment, the exact dates for the tracing and the September festivities program have not yet been released. The year opened with an important recognition: the inscription of the practice in the National Register and the «I Borghi del Solco» conference on May 8th.

The 2026 edition of the Furrow of Saint Michael promises to be particularly significant for Sturno: in the first months of the year, the tracing of the straight furrow was inscribed in the National Register dedicated to rural landscapes of historical interest and traditional practices, a recognition received alongside other Italian villages that share similar rituals.

On May 8, 2026, the municipal auditorium hosted the «I Borghi del Solco» conference, featuring institutional greetings, speeches by scholars, the signing of a new memorandum of understanding between the participating municipalities, and a tasting of local products.

The actual ritual remains linked to the feast of the patron saint, traditionally celebrated at the end of September. The Municipality has included the furrow tracing and the festivities for Saint Michael in the «E-State Sturnese 2026» program, but as of today, the detailed schedule with times and locations has not yet been published. It is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Sturno and the «Il Solco» Cultural Association to find out the final dates.
