Summer cinema under the stars in the cloister of San Rocco in Carpi
When summer arrives, the cloister of San Rocco in Carpi, in the province of Modena, sheds its historic venue skin to become one of the most evocative cinema arenas in Emilia-Romagna. "Tenera è la Notte" is the summer cinema festival that, every year between July and August, offers over fifty evenings of open-air screenings, under the stars and among the arches of the sixteenth-century portico. The name is a tribute to Francis Scott Fitzgerald's novel and perfectly captures the spirit of the event: sweet and intimate evenings, far from the noise, where you can rediscover the pleasure of going to the cinema together.
The lineup is designed to please every type of viewer. There are the major hits of the past season, comedies, and popular titles to rewatch outdoors, but also a constant focus on Italian and European auteur cinema, with a selection ranging from award-winning films at international festivals to national previews. There are also evenings organized with local associations, which combine screenings with moments of reflection on civil and social issues. It's a program that changes its face every night, offering emotion, lightness, and engagement.
What makes "Tenera è la Notte" special is not just the quality of the films, but the location: the cloister of San Rocco, a gem of Carpi's heritage, provides an intimate and cool setting on summer evenings. Screenings begin after sunset, and over the years the festival has become a collective ritual for the people of Carpi, a fixed point in the calendar of LaCarpiEstate, the program of events that enlivens the city from May to October. Inside the cloister, a bar and ice cream service is also available, to fully enjoy the evening.
One of the festival's strengths is its affordable pricing: thanks to participation in the Cinema Revolution campaign promoted by the Ministry of Culture, tickets for Italian and European films remain accessible to all, an explicit invitation to return to the cinema (even when the cinema is an open-air cloister). Promoted by the Municipality of Carpi with the collaboration of the city's cinema and association organizations, "Tenera è la Notte" is much more than just a summer arena: it's how Carpi experiences cinema during the warmest months.
Summer 2026 brings cinema back under the stars in the cloister of San Rocco in Carpi: the "Tenera è la Notte" festival is confirmed from July 2 to August 25, 2026, as part of the LaCarpiEstate program. The curation for the 2026 edition is entrusted to Cinema Ariston, which is reviving the beloved formula of over fifty evenings of open-air screenings.
As every year, the program alternates major hits of the season, the best of Italian and European auteur cinema, and special event nights. The cloister remains one of the most evocative settings to experience cinema on summer evenings, just a short walk from Carpi's historic center.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with the complete list of films for each evening, will be announced shortly before the festival begins (early July) through a dedicated booklet and the official channels of the Municipality of Carpi and VisitCarpi.
