Tendopoli di San Gabriele

A city of tents beneath the Gran Sasso

The Tendopoli di San Gabriele is one of Italy's longest-running religiously inspired youth gatherings. Established in 1981, it takes place every August at the Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell'Addolorata, in the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of Abruzzo. For a few days, the large square in front of the basilica fills with hundreds of tents: hence the name of the event, which turns the experience of precariousness and outdoor living into a true inner journey.

A project by the Passionist Fathers

The gathering is organized by the National Association Tendopoli di San Gabriele together with the Passionist Fathers, guardians of the Sanctuary since 1847. The initiative, conceived by Father Francesco Cordeschi, offers young people a powerful experience of sharing, listening, and spirituality, marked daily by three pillars: human formation, spiritual formation, and joy. Participation is open to everyone and attracts young people from numerous Italian regions.

The days of the Tendopoli

The typical program unfolds over four intense days, with a central theme renewed each year. Recurring highlights include:

• the opening ceremony with the Bishop of the Diocese of Teramo-Atri and the regional superior of the Passionists;
• the arrival of the Torch of Hope, carried in a relay race by runners from Montorio al Vomano to the Sanctuary;
• talks and testimonies from theologians, priests, journalists, and witnesses engaged in issues of faith and society;
• evening concerts, moments of solitude and reconciliation, and the nocturnal Via Crucis;
• the conclusion with the Youth Festival and the traditional pilgrimage on foot from Isola to San Gabriele, followed by the solemn Holy Mass.

A nationally renowned event

With over forty years of history, the Tendopoli has established itself as a benchmark for youth ministry in Abruzzo and beyond. The final day regularly draws thousands of people and has seen the presence of cardinals and high-ranking prelates at the closing celebration over the years. The setting of the Sanctuary of San Gabriele, one of the most visited in Italy, and the view of the Gran Sasso massif make the experience unforgettable, combining spirituality, nature, and community life in one of Abruzzo's most evocative valleys.
