The great Roman and Celtic historical reenactment of Aquileia
Founded by the Romans in 181 BC as an outpost towards Europe, Aquileia was one of the most powerful cities in the Empire. Every year its history is relived thanks to Tempora in Aquileia, one of the most important historical reenactments in Northern Italy, which for three days transforms the center and archaeological areas into a large ancient encampment, with about 500 reenactors, Roman and Celtic, from all over Europe.
The program is a succession of scenes from ancient life: the Sulcus Primigenius, the city's foundation rite, gladiatorial combats, demonstrations of legionary military tactics, workshops on Celtic craftsmanship and Roman daily life. There are also fire rituals, ancient dances, juggling, falconry, and a great final field battle between Roman troops and Celtic forces.
Along the streets winds the historical market, with artisans reproducing ancient techniques and tabernae where you can taste Roman-inspired food and wine. It is an immersive experience designed for the whole family, capable of combining spectacle, historical accuracy, and education.
Organized by the Associazione Tempora with the support of the Municipality of Aquileia (Province of Udine), the event has free admission and represents a unique opportunity to experience the charm of ancient Aquileia amidst its extraordinary archaeological remains, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The 2026 edition of Tempora in Aquileia is scheduled from Friday, June 19th to Sunday, June 21st in the historic center and archaeological areas, with the theme "The Strength of Diplomacy in Antiquity". The reenactment retraces the events of 171 BC, featuring the Roman consul Gaius Cassius Longinus and the confrontation with the Carni Gauls, brought to life by about 500 Roman and Celtic reenactors.
The program, organized by the Associazione Tempora, includes among other things:
