Drama, dance, and contemporary performances in the intimate Italian-style theater of Salento
In the historic center of Novoli, a small town in the province of Lecce famous throughout Puglia for the spectacular Focara of Sant'Antonio Abate, stands an Italian-style theater built in 1881: a cozy jewel with just 188 seats distributed between the stalls, three tiers of boxes, and the gallery. It is in this intimate, climate-controlled hall overlooking Piazza Regina Margherita that the Teatro Comunale di Novoli Theatrical Season comes to life every year, bringing some of the most vibrant names in Italian drama and dance to Salento.
The season is born from the work of the "Passi Comuni" theatrical residency, which brings together two cornerstones of Puglian theater โ Factory Compagnia Transadriatica and Principio Attivo Teatro โ in collaboration with the Municipality of Novoli, the Puglia Region, and the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, as part of the regional Puglia Culture circuit. The theater is not just a performance venue but a true cultural hub for the town: it hosts productions, workshops, family-oriented festivals like "Ci vuole un fiore," and programming dedicated to schools.
The program is intentionally essential: few dates, but carefully selected from auteur drama, reinterpretations of classics, and contemporary dance performances. Shows generally take place in the evening, starting at 8:45 PM, and the small size of the hall creates a close, direct connection between artists and spectators, quite different from that of large city theaters.
Attending a show in Novoli means experiencing theater as a community moment in a Salento town just a few kilometers from Lecce and the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. The season runs throughout the winter and spring months, when Salento is far from the summer tourist crowds and shows its most authentic face: an ideal choice for those who want to discover the cultural side of Puglia, that of small theaters and companies engaged in year-round research.
The 2026 edition of the Teatro Comunale di Novoli (Lecce) Theatrical Season brought four shows to the stage, ranging from contemporary drama to dance, all starting at 8:45 PM. A short but nationally significant program, hosted in the historic Italian-style hall of Piazza Regina Margherita, promoted by the "Passi Comuni" residency with the Municipality of Novoli, the Puglia Region, and the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese.
Opening the festival in January was the rewrite of Chekhov's masterpiece "Three Sisters," directed by Claudia Sorace; followed in the spring by "Come nei giorni migliori" directed by Leonardo Lidi, the powerful "Mephisto" based on Klaus Mann's novel, and closing with the dance-theater project "The Doozies โ Eleonora Duse, Isadora Duncan and us," performed by Marta Dalla Via and Silvia Gribaudi.
