The historic festival for Susa Valley truckers at the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rocciamelone
The Susa Valley Truckers Rally is one of the most beloved and deeply rooted events in the municipality of Mompantero, in the Province of Turin, in the heart of the Alpine Piedmont. Every year on a Sunday in January, truckers and professionals from the logistics, earth-moving, and construction sectors of the valley gather to celebrate their trade in the shadow of the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rocciamelone, a historic destination of devotion in the Susa Valley.
The event was founded in 1962 by Father Felice Bertolo, who remained the "soul" of the rally until his passing in 2003. Since then, his legacy has been honored at every edition, and the sanctuary square has been dedicated to his memory.
The festival begins in the morning with the gathering and exhibition of vehicles in Piazza della Repubblica in Susa: polished trucks, articulated lorries, and work vehicles are put on display before setting off. Around 10:00 AM, the parade begins, winding through the city streets and climbing up to the Sanctuary of Mompantero.
In the churchyard, the vehicles are arranged for the solemn mass, celebrated in suffrage for those who died on the road and deceased truckers. At the end of the service, the parish priest imparts the blessing of the vehicles, the central and most anticipated moment of the rally. The choir accompanies the celebration, renewing the collected and festive atmosphere typical of this occasion.
The rally is much more than a procession of trucks: it is a moment of strong identity for the entire Susa Valley. Local authorities, including the mayor of Mompantero and representatives from the Municipality of Susa, regularly participate in the day alongside law enforcement.
The festival concludes in an atmosphere of friendship, sharing, and joy, with a lunch that brings families together and the historic awards ceremony dedicated to the veterans of the profession. An authentic event that tells the story of the deep bond between work, faith, and the mountains in this corner of Piedmont.
The 63rd edition of the rally was held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, confirming the long tradition started in 1962. The day once again united the community of Susa Valley truckers around the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rocciamelone in Mompantero, in an atmosphere of friendship, sharing, and joy.
Highlights: the parade of heavy vehicles from Susa to the Sanctuary and the blessing of the vehicles on the churchyard. The edition was organized by prior Alessandro Martina and vice-prior Andrea Odetti Bernasconi, with the presence of Mompantero mayor Davide Gastaldo, Susa councilor Giuliano Pelissero, and representatives of law enforcement.
Mompantero is located in the upper Susa Valley, just a few minutes from Susa. By car, it can be reached via the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway (Susa exit) and then following the signs for the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rocciamelone. By train, the reference station is Susa, which is connected to Turin.
The rally is traditionally held on a Sunday in January. The gathering and exhibition of vehicles take place in the morning in Piazza della Repubblica in Susa, followed by the parade towards the Sanctuary.
The event takes place in winter and at altitude: dress in warm clothing. Participation in the parade and mass is free and open to all; for the convivial lunch, booking at the restaurant indicated by the organizers is usually required.
