The night of flowers that transforms the village into an open-air museum
Every year, for the Corpus Domini feast, the village of Spello (province of Perugia) becomes a vast open-air museum. The Infiorate di Spello are among the oldest and most prestigious in Italy: along a route of almost two kilometers, from Porta Consolare to the belvedere, the historic center's streets are covered with floral pictures and carpets made exclusively from petals, leaves, and plant material.
The heart of the event is the Night of Flowers: starting Saturday evening, flower artists work non-stop until dawn to complete their creations before Sunday morning. The compositions, ranging from a few square meters to over seventy, depict sacred subjects, biblical scenes, and extraordinarily complex decorative motifs. It's a collective ritual involving about two thousand peopleโdesigners, flower collectors, and artistsโpassed down through generations.
On Sunday morning, after Mass in the Church of San Lorenzo, the solemn Corpus Domini procession winds through the still-intact artworks, which are then judged by a jury for the competition awards. The main event is complemented by floriculture and craft exhibitions, photographic displays, floral cooking classes, street food, street artist performances, and family activities. Recognized as one of Umbria's most representative popular traditions, the Infiorate attract tens of thousands of visitors to Spello from all over Italy and abroad.
The 2026 edition, featuring the 63rd Flower Carpet Competition, enlivens Spello on the weekend of June 6 and 7. On Saturday, the creation of the artworks begins at 7:00 PM and continues throughout the Night of Flowers; on Sunday morning, once the carpets and tapestries are finished, the jury begins the selection process and the Corpus Domini procession takes place.
Alongside the flower carpets, a rich collateral program includes: a floral cooking class with chef Riccardo Foglietti, a "Spello in Fiore" floriculture and craft exhibition, a bonsai exhibition, "Fiori, cibo e fantasia" non-stop street food, evening concerts, and a free children's area with inflatables.
