About Sezze Carnival

The Sezze Carnival is one of the oldest and most unique folk festivals in the Lazio region, bringing the town of Sezze, in the province of Latina, to life every year with the traditional masks of Peppalacchio and Peppa. From the wedding ceremony in Piazza De Magistris to the vibrant float parades, music, costumed processions, and the iconic final burning of Peppalacchio in Piazza IV Novembre, the event draws crowds of all ages into a ritual rooted in the agricultural cycles and peasant culture of the Lepini Mountains.

The Sezze Carnival, a unique tradition in Lazio

The Sezze Carnival stands as one of the oldest and most distinctive folk events in the Lazio region. Since time immemorial, Sezze, a town nestled in the Lepini Mountains in the province of Latina, has celebrated Carnival in its own inimitable way: it is one of the few Italian towns to possess its own unique masks, Peppalacchio and Peppa, the undisputed stars of the festivities. Organized by the Municipality of Sezze in collaboration with local schools and associations, the festival engages the entire community every year.

Peppalacchio and Peppa, the eternal newlyweds

Peppalacchio is a puppet made of reeds and straw, a symbol of peasant culture, adorned with saraghe fish hanging from his arms; each year, he marries Peppa, who is already expecting. In the symbolism of the ceremony, Peppalacchio represents the dying old year which, through fire, is purified to usher in the harvest season, while Peppa embodies the fertile Mother Earth who remains alive to ensure a bountiful year. This tradition stems from ancient rites linked to the changing of the seasons, when rural life was dictated by the harvest.

The wedding, the parades, and the final bonfire

The Carnival kicks off on Fat Thursday with the famous wedding between Peppalacchio and Peppa in Piazza De Magistris, filled with gags, music, and pranks. In the following days, the historic center and the Sezze Scalo district come alive with float parades, costumed processions, musical groups, and entertainment designed for both adults and children. The most evocative moment is the burning of Peppalacchio in Piazza IV Novembre, which marks the end of the festivities: the fire consuming the puppet symbolically recalls the end of winter and the anticipation of the new agricultural season.

A community celebration in the heart of the Lepini Mountains

The Sezze Carnival is more than just a show; it is a heritage of identity that unites the generations of Sezze. Built through the shared efforts of schools, associations, and the municipal administration, it represents an opportunity to rediscover the roots of the Lepini Mountains' peasant culture and to enjoy a few days of collective joy in the heart of the Lazio region, in the province of Latina.
