The great Carnival celebration between the historic center and the hamlets of the velvet beach town
For over forty years, Senigallia Carnival has been one of the most cherished popular traditions on the Marche coast. In the Municipality of Senigallia, in the province of Ancona, the famous velvet beach, the most colorful festival of the year involves the historic center and numerous hamlets, transforming streets and squares into a large open-air stage made of allegorical floats, masks, confetti, and music.
The distinctive feature of the Senigallia Carnival is its widespread and participatory nature: the first parades start in the hamlets: Vallone, Montignano, Sant'Angelo, Cesano, Brugnetto, Borgo Bicchia, Marzocca, where local associations build and certify the allegorical floats. Only on the final days does the celebration reach the city center, with the grand parade that crosses the heart of Senigallia.
The highlight is the final parade of the allegorical floats, which winds through the city's symbolic locations: Piazza Garibaldi, the Portici Ercolani, the Foro Annonario, Piazza del Duca, and the Corso. Allegorical floats, dancing groups, and masks accompany families and visitors to the final celebration in Piazza Garibaldi, with entertainment, face painting, clowns, candy distribution, and musical guests.
All events are free admission. Senigallia Carnival is organized by the Municipality in close collaboration with the associations of the hamlets and the third sector, who are responsible for building the floats, entertainment, and welcoming the public. It is a festival designed primarily for families and children, with tons of confetti and hundreds of kilos of candy distributed along the routes.
Included in the rich calendar of Carnival in the Marche, the Senigallia event combines the tradition of village parades with a broad city program, capable of attracting thousands of people from all over the province of Ancona and the entire region each year.
The 42nd edition of the Senigallia Carnival took place over three days. On February 8, parades opened in the hamlets of Vallone and Montignano; on February 15, it was the turn of Sant'Angelo, Cesano, Brugnetto, and Borgo Bicchia.
On Mardi Gras, February 17, starting at 2:00 PM, the grand parade of allegorical floats took place through the streets of the historic center. In Piazza Garibaldi, at the end of the procession, Cristina D'Avena performed live, with the participation of the Marching Band of the Gruppo Sbandieratori e Musici Cittร di Foligno.
The event, with free admission, was organized by the Municipality of Senigallia with the associations of the hamlets and the third sector, for an estimated total expenditure of approximately 52,000 euros.
Senigallia is served by its own train station on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway, Senigallia exit. The nearest airport is Ancona-Falconara, about 20 km away.
The Carnival takes place during the Carnival period, between late January and early March, with parades in the hamlets on weekends and the grand finale in the historic center on the key days.
All parades and shows are free admission.
