The ancient Cimbrian rite that makes noise to wake up spring
The Schella Marz is an ancient folk tradition of Cimbrian origin that is renewed at the end of February in Canove, a hamlet of Roana on the Seven Municipalities Plateau, in the province of Vicenza. The name, in the Cimbrian language, refers to "ringing" or "chiming" March: with this rite, winter is bid farewell and spring is "awakened", according to a custom rooted in the Germanic culture of the Plateau.
The heart of the event is the noisy procession: participants, equipped with rattles, pots, lids, and any sort of object capable of making noise, parade through the village streets in a lively and deafening parade. The din, according to tradition, serves to drive away the rigors of winter and to encourage the return of good weather and field work.
The evening culminates in a large bonfire and the burning of the 'vecia', a symbol of the old season burning to make way for the new natural cycle. Hot chocolate and mulled wine, distributed during the feast, warm up the participants. Organized by Pro Loco Canove, the Schella Marz keeps alive the ancient customs of the Seven Municipalities Plateau, in an event cherished by the community.
The 2026 edition of the Schella Marz took place on Saturday, February 28, with a meeting at 8:30 PM at the Palazzetto Polifunzionale in Canove di Roana. "Let's make noise to bid farewell to winter and awaken spring!": following the traditional cry, participants paraded through the village streets equipped with rattles, pots, lids, and other noisy objects.
The noisy procession concluded with a large bonfire and the burning of the 'vecia', a symbol of winter, while hot chocolate and mulled wine warmed the attendees. Organized by Pro Loco Canove, the rite renewed the ancient Cimbrian customs of the Seven Municipalities Plateau.
