The historic running race through the Spanish fortresses of Porto Ercole
The Scarpinata dei 4 Forti Spagnoli is a historic fixture of Maremma running, representing half a century of sport, endurance, and passion. The race takes place in Porto Ercole, a picturesque district of Monte Argentario in the province of Grosseto, leading participants to discover the Argentario promontory, one of the most fascinating corners of the Tuscan coast.
The 9.7 km course alternates between asphalt and dirt, immediately testing the runners' legs with the steep climb toward Forte Filippo. From there, the route continues along the spectacular Via Panoramica to Forte Stella, before descending back into the heart of the village. Along the way, runners pass the four Spanish fortifications that have watched over the town for centuries: La Rocca, Forte Santa Caterina, Forte Filippo, and Forte Stellaโremnants of the State of the Presidi that once made Porto Ercole a military stronghold in the Mediterranean.
The Scarpinata is one of the most anticipated, captivating, and well-attended events in the Corri nella Maremma circuit, drawing athletes from across the region. The combination of competitive spirit and the beauty of the landscape makes it more than just a race: it is a true immersion into the history and scenery of the Argentario.
The event is organized by ASD Atletica Costa d'Argento under the guidance of Jacopo Boscarini, the event's iconic athlete and record holder for the most victories in its long history. The race is traditionally held in the late afternoon or evening, allowing participants to enjoy the golden sunset light over the fortresses and the Tuscan sea.
