The patronal feast of the Etna village, blending faith, processions, and fireworks

The Santa Barbara Festival is the most anticipated and attended event of the summer in Ragalna, a municipality in the province of Catania nestled on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna. Devotion to the patron saint has accompanied the life of the Ragalna community for centuries, uniting them around their religious identity in an event of profound symbolic and emotional value.
The veneration of Santa Barbara in Ragalna is rooted in an episode etched into the collective memory: during the 1780 eruption of Mount Etna, tradition holds that a lava flow threatening the territory stopped in the Eredità district, precisely where the saint's relics had been carried in procession. From that miracle, an unbreakable bond was born between the town and its protector, passed down from generation to generation and celebrated with great fervor to this day.
The heart of the festivities is the evening procession of the Santa Barbara reliquary statue, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by a brass band and the choral participation of the faithful. The most emotional moment is the final run toward Piazza Santa Barbara, where the return of the statue is greeted by a fireworks display, amidst applause, emotion, and deep popular devotion.
The festivities are part of the rich summer program of the Municipality of Ragalna, which offers theatrical performances, concerts, folk shows, and religious feasts during the season, highlighting the traditions of the Etna village and its hospitality toward visitors and pilgrims.
Experiencing the Santa Barbara festival in Ragalna means immersing yourself in an authentic Sicilian folk tradition, far from the major tourist circuits, in a landscape dominated by Europe's highest volcano. It is an opportunity to discover the genuine soul of a small Sicilian town and the strength of a devotion that continues to unite entire generations.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Barbara Festival in Ragalna is expected during the summer, in keeping with the tradition of the Etna village. At the moment, the precise dates and program have not yet been published: please refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Ragalna and the parish for updates. As in past years, solemn liturgical celebrations, the evocative evening procession of the reliquary statue, and the pyrotechnic show in Piazza Santa Barbara are planned.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Ragalna (CT) and culminate in Piazza Santa Barbara, in front of the church of the same name.
By car: Ragalna can be reached via the SP4/SP92 road in the direction of Etna South; it is about 25 km from Catania. The reference airport is Catania-Fontanarossa. The village is one of the gateways to the southern side of Etna Park.
Admission to the celebrations and the procession is free. For updated dates and the program, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Ragalna and the parish.
