The patron saint's festival in the Ciociaria village of Castro dei Volsci
The Sant'Oliva Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for Castro dei Volsci, a village in the Ciociaria region of the province of Frosinone, Lazio. Every year in early June, the community gathers around its patron saint, combining religious devotion with popular tradition in a celebration that involves the entire town. The event is organized by the Municipality of Castro dei Volsci in collaboration with the local parish and community associations.
According to tradition, Oliva was born in Anagni to a noble family. Refusing marriage, she consecrated herself to God and retired to the Benedictine monastery in her city, where she died on June 3rd. Her bond with Castro dei Volsci is recounted in an ancient legend claiming the saint arrived in the village in 1125, commemorated by a plaque inscribed with «Ipse Jesus - Castri custodem - me Olivam posuit». The Church of Sant'Oliva, first mentioned in a 1125 papal bull, is dedicated to her and houses the statue of the patron saint on a golden throne.
The heart of the festival is the procession: the statue of Sant'Oliva, carried on shoulders upon her golden throne, traverses the alleys and squares of the historic center, followed by the faithful to the sound of bells and the local band. The solemn mass in honor of the patron saint brings together the entire community and the many locals who return from afar for the occasion. It is a moment of strong collective identity, renewing a centuries-old cult every year.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the festival maintains its traditional village fair: stalls, typical Ciociaria products, stands, and entertainment enliven the village streets, turning the occasion into a moment of encounter and conviviality. Each year, the Municipality manages the layout of stalls and the organization of spaces to welcome exhibitors and visitors.
Perched on the Ausoni Mountains and overlooking the Sacco River valley, Castro dei Volsci is nicknamed the «balcony of the Ciociaria» and is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The medieval historic center, with its alleys, stairways, and views stretching over the Frosinone countryside, provides a natural backdrop for the festival. Participating in the Sant'Oliva Feast means discovering an authentic corner of southern Lazio, where religious tradition, history, and landscape have been intertwined for centuries.
The 2026 edition of the Sant'Oliva Patronal Feast was held in Castro dei Volsci (FR) on June 2nd and 3rd, as per the calendar confirmed by the Municipality. As is tradition, the celebrations combined the religious dimension—solemn mass and procession of the patron saint's statue on the golden throne—with the village fair featuring stalls and stands along the village streets. For the occasion, the Municipality organized the layout of the stalls and the spaces intended for exhibitors.
By car: from Rome via the A1 motorway, exit at Ceprano or Frosinone, then follow signs for Castro dei Volsci (about an hour and a half from Rome, and fifteen kilometers from Frosinone). The reference railway station is Ceprano-Falvaterra on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, which is connected by local bus services.
Religious celebrations and participation in the festival are free of charge. Any purchases at the village fair stands are paid.
The historic village is largely pedestrian and hilly: comfortable shoes are recommended. It is worth combining the festival with a visit to the medieval center and the panoramic views of the Sacco valley.
