Sant'Anatolia, patron saint of Castel di Tora

The Sant'Anatolia Festival is the patronal feast of Castel di Tora, a small municipality in the Province of Rieti, in the heart of the Lazio Sabina. Each year, on the second Sunday of July, the entire village gathers around its protector, the virgin and martyr Anatolia, who has been venerated in this area since ancient times. The saint's cult is evidenced by the works of art kept in the parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista and a sanctuary dedicated to her that dates back to before the year 1000.

An ancient cult revived every summer

The current form of the festival dates back to the 1920s, when local emigrants commissioned a new effigy of the saint as a sign of their bond with their homeland. Since then, the celebration has combined religious and community dimensions, attracting not only residents but also many pilgrims and holidaymakers from the Sabina region and the shores of Lake Turano to Castel di Tora.

The procession across the lake

The most solemn moment is the procession which, following the Eucharistic celebration, moves from the village towards the sanctuary located across the lake, in the locality of Villa Santa Anatolia. The martyr's effigy, accompanied by a brass band and the praying community, rests at the sanctuary for the entire night, only to be brought back to the village the following morning amidst the joy of the faithful awaiting their saint's return.

The Asta ritual and fireworks over the Turano

Concluding the religious portion is the characteristic Asta ritual: a small statue of the saint is entrusted, year by year, to a new family from the village, who becomes its guardian for the next twelve months. On the festive side, the spectacular climax arrives with the night-time fireworks display, whose reflections dance on the waters of Lake Turano, creating one of the most evocative images of the Rieti summer.

Between faith and conviviality

Alongside the sacred rites, the festival offers days of conviviality starting as early as Friday: food stalls featuring typical Sabina products, brass band concerts, musical ensembles, children's entertainment, and dance evenings enliven the village squares until late at night. The Sant'Anatolia Festival is thus both a moment of devotion and the main event of the summer in Castel di Tora.

One of Italy's most beautiful villages

Castel di Tora, included in the Borghi più belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) circuit, provides an exceptional setting for the festival: stone houses perched above Lake Turano, glimpses of the ancient village of Antuni, and the Cicolano mountains. Participating in the Sant'Anatolia Festival means experiencing an authentic folk tradition of inland Lazio, far from the major tourist circuits and in close contact with the identity of a community that has guarded the memory of its patron saint for centuries.
