Sant'Alessio Siculo Folk is an event that celebrates popular traditions in the municipality of Sant'Alessio Siculo, a small village overlooking the Ionian Sea in the province of Messina, Sicily. The event brings the color and energy of Sicilian folklore to the heart of the town, with a parade and a series of performances involving folk groups from the local area and the wider Ionian region.
The program centers around the parade of folk groups, who march through the historic center in traditional attire, accompanied by music and dance. Local ensembles and guests from the surrounding area take turns on stage and along the route: featured groups from recent editions include Mata e Grifone, I Molesi, and I Canterini della Riviera Jonica Melino Romolo, all guardians of song and dance repertoires that tell the story of the farming and maritime culture of the Ionian Sicily.
The festival is part of the tradition of popular feasts that have always enlivened the small villages between Taormina and Messina. With drums, accordions, friscaletti (traditional flutes), and period costumes, these folk groups keep alive a memory made of traditional dances, serenades, and rituals linked to the cycle of the seasons and the work of the land and sea.
Promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Alessio Siculo, the event is designed as a meeting point for the community and a way to promote local intangible heritage. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is the convivial one typical of Sicilian village festivals, with the participation of families, enthusiasts, and curious visitors.
Sant'Alessio Siculo Folk is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Ionian coast of Messina and to experience the charm of Sicily's popular traditions up close.
