The neighborhood festival of Santa Maria Capua Vetere honoring Saint Augustine, Bishop of Capua, featuring solemn mass, processions, brass bands, and fireworks.

The Sant'Agostino District Patronal Festival is one of the most cherished events in the popular calendar of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, a town in the province of Caserta, Campania. Not to be confused with the major city-wide Assumption festival that involves the entire center in mid-August, this is a neighborhood celebration where the district surrounding Via del Lavoro and the parish of Saint Augustine, Bishop of Capua, pauses for a few days in early September to honor its patron saint.
The saint being celebrated is not the Augustine of Hippo from philosophy textbooks, but Saint Augustine, Bishop of Capua, remembered as one of the first bishops of ancient Capua. Tradition holds that he arrived from Africa during the persecution of Decius around 249 AD, along with his mother, Felicita; both are said to have suffered martyrdom on November 15, 260 AD. The bond with the territory is therefore ancient, explaining why the district has kept such a deep-rooted devotion alive, with a parish bearing the saint's name and a neighborhood committee that organizes the festivities every year.
The heart of the festival remains liturgical. The main day begins at dawn with the ringing of bells and cannon shots that wake the district. In the morning, a solemn mass is celebrated in the parish church, accompanied by the parish choir. In the afternoon, the statue of the saint is carried in a procession through all the streets of the neighborhood, accompanied by a brass band. Upon returning to the church late in the evening, the sky above the district lights up with a fireworks display, traditionally entrusted to local pyrotechnic mastersโa finale eagerly awaited by the entire neighborhood and many curious visitors from neighboring towns.
Alongside the rituals, the committee organizes live music evenings within the district or in nearby green spaces. In one of the most elaborate editions, the festivities concluded with a concert by Enzo Avitabile in the urban park adjacent to the Campanian Amphitheatre, just a short walk from the district. However, the program changes from year to year and is released by the committee only a few weeks before the festival; it is always best to check official announcements.
In recent years, the festival has added a sporting event: the Corri per Sant'Agostino, a ten-kilometer road race organized by ASD Sant'Agostino in collaboration with the festival committee and the runners' federation, which reached its second edition in 2025. The meeting point is on Via del Lavoro, in front of the parish church, with separate starts for registered athletes and a trial open to citizens, children, and families. It is the neighborhood's way of combining devotion with a sporting and participatory dimension.
Those looking for a massive, spectacular event will find more immediate answers elsewhere; however, those who want to understand how a patronal festival is truly experienced in Campania will find a clear example here: a community that self-funds, decorates its own streets, sings, cooks, and walks behind the saint's statue. All this is just a few hundred meters from the Campanian Amphitheatre and the Mithraeum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, making it easy to combine the festival with a day of archaeological sightseeing.
For 2026, no official dates or detailed program have been published for the festivities of the Sant'Agostino district in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. As every year, the neighborhood committee releases the flyer with the calendar of rites and musical evenings only close to the event, usually at the end of the summer.
Based on previous editions, the festivities are concentrated in early September and revolve around the solemn mass in the parish of Saint Augustine, Bishop of Capua, the procession of the patron saint's statue through the district streets accompanied by a brass band, and the evening fireworks display. Lights, market stalls, and musical evenings complete the picture. All information will be updated as soon as the committee publishes the 2026 program.
