The Patronal Feast of Ateleta

The San Vincenzo Ferreri Patronal Feast is the most cherished religious event in Ateleta, a mountain village in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, perched at an altitude of 760 metres along the left bank of the Sangro River, at the entrance to the Majella National Park. Every year, on April 5th, the community gathers to honour its protector in a day that weaves together devotion, historical memory, and a sense of belonging.

The cult of San Vincenzo Ferreri in Ateleta is deeply rooted in the town's history. The municipality was officially founded in the early 19th century by a royal decree in 1811 issued by Joachim Murat; it is from this period that both the patronage of San Vincenzo Ferreri and the dedication of the parish church to San Gioacchino originate. The name Ateleta itself derives from the Greek atelés, meaning "tax-free," commemorating the tax exemptions granted to the first settlers to encourage the repopulation of these lands.

San Vincenzo Ferreri, a Dominican preacher born in Valencia in 1350 and who died in Vannes, Brittany, on April 5, 1419, was famous throughout Europe for his eloquence and the reputation of his miracles. Canonised in 1455, he is venerated as a patron saint in several Abruzzese towns, and his feast day falls annually on the fixed date of his death.

Rites and Traditions

The heart of the celebration is the parish church of San Gioacchino, where solemn liturgical services are held in honour of the patron saint. The day is marked by a solemn Holy Mass and the traditional procession featuring the saint's statue through the town centre—a moment when the entire community, along with many former residents returning for the occasion, unites around its religious and civic identity.
