About San Marco Fair

The San Marco Fair is the most anticipated event in Caprarica di Lecce. Every April 25th since 1848, this small Salento village transforms into a vast open-air market stretching from one end of town to the other. Artisanal stalls, traditional Salento products like cupeta and scapece, handmade terracotta whistles, equestrian shows, live music, and folk dancing enliven one of the oldest fairs in the province of Lecce, Puglia. It is a community celebration that blends devotion, rural tradition, and joy.

One of the oldest fairs in Salento

The San Marco Fair is an unmissable event for Caprarica di Lecce, a small town in the province of Lecce nestled in the Salento countryside. Documented continuously since 1848, it is among the oldest and most cherished fairs in the region; in 2025, it celebrated its 177th edition. Every April 25th, the village fills with visitors arriving from early morning, drawn by a tradition that has been renewed for nearly two centuries.

Rural origins

The fair has its roots in the agricultural world of Salento. Originally, it was famous for the buying, selling, and trading of livestock and farming tools, essential for field work. Over time, the event has preserved its popular soul, evolving into a great community festival where street commerce coexists with craftsmanship, gastronomy, and entertainment.

The cult of Saint Mark

The fair is dedicated to Saint Mark, venerated in Caprarica as the protector of hearing. A popular tradition holds that the faithful anoint their ears with blessed oil at the Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine, where the painting of the Saint is kept. Thus, the religious and secular dimensions intertwine in a single day of celebration.

The town becomes a market

During the fair, the entire town comes alive: stalls stretch from the entrance of Galugnano to that of Castrรฌ, occupying squares, streets, and open spaces. Every type of merchandise can be found among the stalls, from handicrafts to traditional terracotta objects like pignate (cooking pots), bells, and the famous Salento whistles. Exhibitions, workshops, and displays enliven the Baronial Palace, Piazza Vittoria, and the Town Hall.

Salento flavors and craftsmanship

Gastronomy is a highlight: among the stalls, you will find sweets and typical products like cupeta (almond and honey brittle) and scapece, along with many specialties of Salento's rural cuisine. This food and craftsmanship create the convivial atmosphere that makes the San Marco Fair a defining moment for the Caprarica community.

Entertainment for all ages

The Villa Comunale Francesco Greco hosts equestrian shows, live music, and folk dances, while Piazza Vittoria turns into a space dedicated to children with attractions and entertainment. Throughout the day, and sometimes on the eve of the event, concerts and performances take place, bringing artists from the Salento scene and beyond to the village.

2026 Edition

For updated information, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Municipality of Caprarica di Lecce and the local Pro Loco closer to the event.
