Masks, parades, and entertainment in an Irpinian village overlooking the Calore valley

Every year, between February and March, the San Mango sul Calore Carnival brings color and joy to one of the smallest villages in Irpinia. Located in the province of Avellino, in Campania, at an altitude of about 470 meters, the village sits on a ridge overlooking the Calore river valley. With just over a thousand inhabitants, the local Sanmanghesi fill the square and the streets of the town center during these days. There are no massive floats or imposing stages: here, Carnival is a true village festival, built by families and local associations, where dressing up is a collective act and the fun is designed primarily for children.
The heart of the event is the masked parade. The gathering takes place in Piazza del Santuario, the village's most iconic space, where children meet in the early afternoon wearing colorful costumes and imaginative masks. From there, the procession winds through the streets of the town, accompanied by music and the participation of residents watching from their doorways. It is a village-scale parade that traverses alleys and squares rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, reflecting a community that has made cohesion its hallmark.
After the tour of the village streets, the festivities move to the «Teodoro De Masi» Social Centre, which hosts the second part of the afternoon: entertainment shows, games, music, and activities designed to involve both adults and children. It is the classic indoor finale that allows the celebrations to continue even when the late-winter climate of inland Irpinia turns chilly. Admission is free and participation is open to everyone, residents and visitors alike.
The organization is managed by the Municipality of San Mango sul Calore in collaboration with the Pro Loco Sanmanghese and the local Confraternita di Misericordia: the same organizations that bring the entire local calendar to life, from the Cavalcata di Sant'Anna to the Fig Festival, and the Christmas events. This continuity is what allows a small municipality to keep alive a carnival tradition that has progressively faded in other inland villages.
Visitors arriving for Carnival discover a medieval village immersed in greenery, featuring the Church of Sant'Anna and the Ponte di Annibale, a late-Roman bridge crossing the Calore river. The town is famous for three iconic products: the San Mango fig, the red chestnut, and Taurasi wine, produced in the surrounding hills. The most cherished traditions are the Cavalcata di Sant'Anna, a folkloric-religious ritual with costumed knights held on the last Sunday of July, and the Fig Festival in mid-July. Carnival, however, represents the event that opens the year of festivities, being the most informal and family-oriented.
The province of Avellino preserves some of the most vibrant carnival traditions in Southern Italy: the tarantella of Montemarano, the Teora Carnival with its ancient rites, the Castelvetere Carnival with its allegorical floats, not to mention the Zeza, a popular sung farce recognized as Intangible Heritage of the Campania Region. San Mango sul Calore fits into this landscape with a more intimate celebration: those staying in the area can easily build a multi-day itinerary across the towns of the Calore and Taurasi areas, all reachable in just a few minutes by car.
As of the date of writing this sheet, there are no press releases, flyers, or municipal notices regarding a 2026 edition of the San Mango sul Calore Carnival. The official website of the Municipality and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino do not report dates or programs for the 2026 carnival period, while they give ample space to other village appointments, such as the Fig Festival in July and the Cavalcata di Sant'Anna.
The event remains part of the traditional calendar of the Irpinian village: in previous editions, it was held in the afternoon, with a gathering of masks in Piazza del Santuario, a parade along the streets of the center, and final entertainment at the «Teodoro De Masi» Social Centre. The date indicated on this page is purely indicative and will be updated as soon as the Municipality of San Mango sul Calore, the Pro Loco Sanmanghese, or the Confraternita di Misericordia release the official program.
San Mango sul Calore is located in central Irpinia, about 30 kilometers from Avellino. By car, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway towards Avellino and continue along the Strada Statale 400 and Strada Provinciale 39, following signs for the village. Public transport is provided by AIR Campania regional bus lines; the Luogosano-San Mango sul Calore railway station, on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, is now used only by historical and tourist trains.
The gathering of masks takes place in Piazza del Santuario; the parade then moves through the streets of the town center, and the final entertainment is held at the «Teodoro De Masi» Social Centre.
Participation is free: there is no ticket required for either the parade or the afternoon of entertainment.
