Four days of faith, blessed tractors, and local festivities in the heart of the Sannio region

At the beginning of September, the Municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore—a town of just over 1,800 residents at an altitude of 330 meters in the Valle Telesina, Province of Benevento (Campania)—gathers for the San Bernardino da Siena Festival. While the town's official patron saint is Saint Lawrence (celebrated in August), this parallel devotion is deeply felt, centered around the 16th-century Church of San Bernardino, which houses a fine statue of the saint and marble works from Vitulano. For four days, liturgy, field work, and street conviviality intertwine seamlessly.
The festival begins with the triduum: three evenings of prayer, the Holy Rosary, and Eucharistic celebrations led by guest priests—in the 2025 edition, Friar Antonio Trimigliozzi and Father Antonio Macolino—alongside the local parish priest, Father Leucio Cutillo. This is the most intimate part of the calendar, providing the spiritual foundation for the entire event; before the square and the music, there is the church, where the faithful gather each evening as they have for generations.
The most iconic moment arrives on Saturday: the parade of tractors and agricultural machinery through the town streets, followed by a blessing from the parish priest. This is no mere folkloric curiosity, but a rite of thanksgiving that reflects the real economy of this corner of Sannio, defined by vineyards—Aglianico and Falanghina of the Valle Telesina—olive groves, and small family businesses. For many locals, seeing dozens of polished vehicles parading through the historic center is the very essence of the festival.
On Sunday morning, Holy Mass is celebrated outdoors in Piazza Dante at 10:00 AM, drawing a large crowd that fills the square. Afterward, the statue of San Bernardino is carried in a solemn procession through the alleys and streets of the town, accompanied by the CittĂ di Castelvenere Brass Band: the symphonic marches, a strong tradition in Southern Italy, set the pace for the procession and its stops. In the evening, the community returns to the parish for the final Eucharistic celebration.
Friday evening is dedicated to one of the most beautiful ideas in the program: Via Elci transforms into one long table under the stars. Each family brings something to share, and people sit alongside neighbors, relatives, and emigrants who have returned for the festival. No tickets, no set menu: just the ancient logic of sharing, which still works perfectly in a town of a few hundred families.
The Saturday and Sunday evenings bring live music to Piazza Dante: in 2025, the group Aranis and the band Furìa performed, with repertoires designed to get all generations dancing. Throughout the festivities, a food stall managed by the Festival Committee serves traditional Sannio dishes and local products. The finale is the midnight fireworks display, which closes the Sunday festivities by illuminating the hills surrounding the town.
This is not a festival built for tourism; it is a celebration the town creates for itself, welcoming anyone who arrives. Those looking for an authentic slice of inland Italy—the world of festival committees, brass bands, blessed tractors, and street-side dining—will find a rare concentration of it here, just half an hour from Benevento and a short distance from the wineries of the Valle Telesina and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Strada.
As of late July 2026, the official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released. As every year, the announcement typically arrives in the weeks immediately preceding the event, between late August and the very first days of September. The dates should therefore be considered indicative until the official poster is published; it is best to follow the channels of the San Lorenzo Maggiore Festival Committee and local parish or municipal notices.
As of the writing of this page, there is no official announcement regarding the 2026 San Bernardino da Siena Festival in San Lorenzo Maggiore, in the Province of Benevento. In 2025, the festivities took place from September 4th to 7th, and the public announcement of the program arrived at the end of August: it is reasonable to expect a similar timeline.
For this reason, the date indicated is a simple reference to the usual month and not a confirmed date. Those wishing to attend can follow the San Lorenzo Maggiore Festival Committee page, the notices of the San Lorenzo Martire Parish, and local Sannio news sites, which publish the complete program every year with times for masses, the procession, the blessing of agricultural machinery, concerts, and the fireworks display. We will update this page as soon as the official poster is available.
By car: Take the Ponte-Casalduni or Vitulano exit on the SS 372 Telesina, then follow provincial roads toward San Lorenzo Maggiore; about 25 km from Benevento (30-35 minutes) and about 80 km from Naples. By train: Ponte Casalduni or Solopaca station on the Benevento-Caserta line, then bus or taxi. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, about an hour and a half drive away.
Religious events are concentrated between the Church of San Bernardino and the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo; solemn mass and concerts are held in Piazza Dante; the community dinner is in Via Elci. Everything is within walking distance in the town center.
Participation in rites, the procession, concerts, and fireworks is free. You only pay for what you consume at the Festival Committee's food stall.
Park along the ring road and reach the center on foot: during the procession and the agricultural machinery parade, internal streets are closed. September evenings in the hills can be cool, so a sweater is useful. For accommodation, farmhouses and wineries with guest facilities in the Valle Telesina (Solopaca, Guardia Sanframondi, Telese Terme) are the best options.
