About Salerno Dance Festival in Gioi

Every summer, the Salerno Dance Festival takes contemporary dance out of theaters and into the villages of the Salerno province. Gioi, nestled in the heart of the Cilento hinterland, is one of its most cherished stops. For two nights, the historic town squares transform into open-air stages, featuring a mix of emerging choreographers, Italian companies, and international guests. Performances begin at 9:30 PM, tickets are symbolic, and the stunning Cilento landscape serves as a natural backdrop.

Contemporary dance in the squares of Gioi

For two summer evenings, the small town of Gioi, in the province of Salerno, sheds its quiet village persona and transforms into an open-air theater. This is the Cilento stop of the Salerno Dance Festival, a traveling contemporary dance event that tours the Salerno territory. In Gioi, it finds one of its most characteristic settings: Piazza Andrea Maio, in the heart of the historic center, where the audience sits right up against the dancers.

This is no random scenic choice. For years, the festival has operated on the premise that locations are not merely containers for shows, but active participants in the artistic experience. Squares, gardens, museums, and archaeological sites across the province are woven into the dramaturgy of the performances, which are often adapted to the spaces that host them.

A traveling festival in the province of Salerno

The Salerno Dance Festival is promoted by CDTM – Circuito Danza Teatro e Musica under the artistic direction of Luigi Aruta, and is realized with the recognition of the Ministry of Culture and the support of the Campania Region. Over the course of just over a month, the festival visits six locations in the province—from the National Archaeological Museum of Pontecagnano to the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, passing through Ascea, Sala Consilina, Camerota, and, of course, Gioi—showcasing dozens of performances and around twenty-five national and international companies.

The common thread of recent editions is De Rerum Natura, a title borrowed from Lucretius' poem: nature, the body, and the landscape as the raw material of choreographic creation. A theme that, in Gioi, surrounded by the hills of Cilento, reads almost for itself.

What to see in Gioi

The two Gioi evenings are structured according to a recognizable format that is highly appreciated by the public:

  • The evening dedicated to the new generation, featuring short works selected by the C.RE.A.RE Campania project, a regional initiative that supports young authors and Campanian choreographic creativity;
  • The guest evening, featuring established companies from the Italian contemporary scene and foreign groups—in recent years, groups from various European countries have performed in Gioi.

These are almost always short pieces, ranging from ten to forty minutes, grouped into triptychs: a formula that works well with a mixed audience of dedicated enthusiasts and residents who come out to the square after dinner. The time is fixed at 9:30 PM, when the heat has subsided and the square lights up.

Gioi, a village in the Cilento hinterland

Gioi is located in the Cilento hinterland, in Campania, just a few kilometers from the coast but already in a hilly environment, within the perimeter of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The historic center is typical of the area's villages: narrow alleys, stairways, stone portals, and squares that open up unexpectedly. The two squares used by the festival—Piazza Andrea Maio and, in the past, Piazza Sant'Eustachio—are just a few steps from each other and capture this intimate dimension perfectly.

For those unfamiliar with the Cilento hinterland, the dance evening is also a great excuse for a trip: the village can be explored in an hour, and the surrounding towns offer a landscape that remains much less crowded than the coast during the summer.

Why it's worth visiting

  • National and international level programming in a setting with only a few hundred inhabitants;
  • Symbolic ticket price, designed to make contemporary dance accessible to everyone;
  • Open-air performances, in the evening, with the historic center as a scenic backdrop;
  • A rare opportunity to see works by young Campanian choreographers before they circulate in major theaters.

Salerno Dance Festival in Gioi — edition 2026

In 2026, the Salerno Dance Festival – De Rerum Natura returned to Gioi Cilento on Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18, with two evenings in Piazza Andrea Maio dedicated to contemporary choreographic research. The first evening was entrusted to the young authors of the C.RE.A.RE Campania project, the second to two prominent guests: the Compagnia degli Istanti from Florence and the Albanian Dance Theater Company. Curtain at 9:30 PM, ticket 3 euros.

Gioi Cilento, July 17 and 18, 2026

The Gioi stop of the 2026 edition of the Salerno Dance Festival – De Rerum Natura took place in Piazza Andrea Maio, in the heart of the village, with two consecutive evenings at 9:30 PM. The festival, directed by Luigi Aruta and promoted by CDTM – Circuito Danza Teatro e Musica, toured six locations in the province of Salerno this year between June 21 and July 26, with over thirty performances and about twenty-five Italian and foreign companies (France, Spain, Switzerland, Albania).

In Gioi, the formula contrasted two worlds: on one side, the short creations of emerging Campanian choreographers, and on the other, the repertoire of companies with a consolidated history. The official festival calendar had also indicated two appointments in Gioi at the end of June, but the evenings of July 17 and 18 were those announced by the local press with the detailed program.

A double look at the contemporary scene

The first appointment was entirely dedicated to C.RE.A.RE Campania, the regional project that supports the new generations of dance; the second hosted an Italian and an international company, bringing languages usually seen in the theatrical circuits of big cities to a Cilento square.
