Four days of faith, tradition, and conviviality in the Santo Stefano district of Vitulano
The Saint Stephen Festival is the signature summer event for the district of the same name in Vitulano, a town in the Province of Benevento, Campania, overlooking the Taburno massif. For four days during the second week of July, the neighborhood streets come alive with festive lights, chairs brought out from homes, the aroma of grilled meat, and liturgical chants: it is the timeless formula of Sannio's district festivals, where devotion to the patron saint and neighborhood life become one.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Saint Stephen, where evening Holy Masses are celebrated in the days leading up to the feast. The final Sunday is the most intense day: the morning mass is followed by a solemn procession that carries the statue of Saint Stephen through the streets of the district, surrounded by the faithful, families, and decorated balconies; further celebrations mark the rest of the morning and evening. Local chronicles speak of extraordinary participation and a prayerful atmosphere that restores the profound meaning of the event, far beyond its local neighborhood dimension.
Alongside the liturgical program runs the secular one, organized by the district volunteers. The evenings alternate between ballroom and Latin American dancing, grand variety shows with dancers and television guests, cabaret, and, late at night, disco music. It is a deliberately popular and intergenerational lineup: the older generation dances to the show orchestras, while the youth stay for the midnight house and tarantella sets. No monumental stage, no tickets: you arrive, find a spot, and stay.
Throughout the festivities, the food stand run by volunteers remains open, featuring specialties prepared strictly on the grill. It is where the festival becomes pure conviviality: shared tables, generous portions, and village-festival prices. A simple opportunity to taste the honest cuisine of the Vitulanese Valley, consisting of grilled meats and no-frills dishes, enjoyed outdoors while the show is being set up on stage.
The closing follows a fixed ritual: the raffle draw, which funds a large part of the festival's expenses, and at the stroke of midnight, the fireworks display that illuminates the district and the mountainside. It is the moment when, for a few minutes, all of Vitulano looks up at the sky: a noisy, collective farewell that serves as an appointment for the following year.
Vitulano has just over 2,600 inhabitants and stretches out at an altitude of about 443 meters within the Taburno-Camposauro Regional Park. The town is known for its historic marble quarries—the famous Vitulano marble, used in numerous Baroque construction sites in Southern Italy—and for a heritage of churches and convents that deserves a stop even outside of festival days. Those who come up for Saint Stephen have a double reason to visit: the neighborhood festival and the trails of the Taburno, which start just a few kilometers from the town center.
The festival is promoted by the Santo Stefano Cultural Association in collaboration with the «Santa Maria del Bosco» Parish, led by Father Cosimo Iadanza, with the support of the Vitulano municipal administration, law enforcement, local sponsors, and a group of volunteers who set up, cook, welcome, and dismantle every year. As the organizers wrote, spirituality, tradition, conviviality, and a sense of community are inextricably intertwined here: "a true collective heritage to be guarded and passed on to future generations."
From July 9th to 12th, 2026, the Santo Stefano district of Vitulano, in the Province of Benevento, celebrated its annual festival in honor of the patron saint of the neighborhood church. The program, curated by the Santo Stefano Cultural Association together with the «Santa Maria del Bosco» Parish of Father Cosimo Iadanza, brought together the religious and secular aspects as always.
The most heartfelt moment arrived on Sunday, July 12th: after the 8:30 AM mass, the solemn procession accompanied the statue of Saint Stephen along the streets of the district, with a presence of the faithful that local chronicles defined as extraordinary. On the same day, two other masses were celebrated, at 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
The evenings alternated between ballroom and Latin American dancing with Davide and Daniela, the Grand Variety show on Saturday with dancers from "Amici di Maria De Filippi", and the comedy show by Simone Schettino, closed at midnight by the house and tarantella sets of "Revolution Tarantella e Disco". Sunday featured the Roberto Show Orchestra with the Fisarmonicando Band, the lottery draw at 11:30 PM, and, at the stroke of midnight, the fireworks display by the Pannella firm of Ponte. The food stand with grilled specialties remained active throughout all four evenings. Once the festival concluded, the organizers thanked the municipal administration, the parish priest, law enforcement, sponsors, and volunteers, speaking of "a true collective heritage."
The food stand remained active for all four evenings.
Vitulano is located in the Vitulanese Valley, about twenty kilometers west of Benevento, at the foot of the Taburno massif. By car, you can drive up from Benevento along the SS7 Appia and the provincial roads of the valley; from Naples, take the A16 motorway or the same SS7. The reference railway station is Benevento, connected to the town by suburban bus lines; the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino. The festival takes place in the Santo Stefano district, around the church of the same name: parking spaces are limited, so it is better to arrive a little early on the main evenings.
Religious celebrations and evening shows in the district are free to access: local sources do not report any entrance tickets. You only pay for what you consume at the food stand and, if you wish to participate, for the lottery ticket that supports the festival's expenses.
